My mom stared at me as she came in and saw the suit cases.
"What's going on?" My dad asked.
Emerald came in with the tea tray just as we had rehearsed.
"Well. . . before I tell you, why don't you have some tea?" I said in a small voice.
They both took a cup and began to drink.
"Hey mom you know grandma's sister?" I said but rushed on before they had a chance to answer.
"Well she had a daughter, who lived in Greece. And that daughter had her own kids named Emerald and Piper.
"Any way the mom and her husband were killed in a tragic car crash. So the kids, Emerald and Piper, were sent here to live with us in the U.S.A." I said finally finishing the tale that we had put together to hopefully fool my parents.
"Oh, why my mother never told me she had a sister." My mom said.
Uh-oh. I said to myself.
"But since both my parents are dead, I guess I can't ask them." My mom replied.
"Now Emerald you go get your sister." My dad said.
Emerald nodded and left the room, then she came back with Piper.
"Welcome to our home, and we're so sorry about you mom and dad." My mom said with tears in her eyes.
"Such a sweet little baby." My dad said as he lifted Piper from Emerald's arms.
"We'll see what we can do about adopting you and your sister." My mom said to Emerald as she gave her a hug.
I didn't like telling my mom and dad these things that weren't true, but we had to find a safe place for Emerald and Piper to live.
