Chapter Thirty-One

Christopher' mom drove us to the dance. My mom and dad couldn't.

"I'll see you boys later, have fun with the girls!" His mom said with a smile.

"Oh mom don't say that!" He yelled as she drove off.

"Moms." Christopher said with a sigh.

"At least she's alive." I said helpfully.

"Yeah." Christopher said with a nodded.

"Hey Christopher!" Phoenix said as she came up behind him and as he turned around he hugged her.

"Wow Phoenix! You look great!" Christopher said after he let go of her and looked at her

clothes.

She was wearing a strapless Hawaiian dress, Brooke was wearing one that was similar, only different colors.

"I like your shoes!" Christopher said as he looked at her shoes.

"Thanks! I got them from 9&co." Phoenix replied with a smile.

The shoes, I think, I am a boy so I don't remember these things as well. They were black high heals with little Rhine stone dragonflies on them. And Brooke was wearing the same shoes, they sure like to match a lot.

We walked into the high school's gym where they were holding the dance.

Many of kids were already dancing, and the music was blasting.

We walked over to the food table where me and Christopher's friends were.

"Look! There's Jenna and Jam! Guys we'll be right back!" Phoenix said as she walked over to her friends.

"Jenna, Jam I love your dresses!" Phoenix said as she looked them up and down.

I didn't get. All the dresses looked the same."Ryan man!" Yelled Lee as he walked over to us.

"Lee, how's it going?" I asked casually.

"Let's dance!" Lee's date yelled as she grabbed him and pulled him out onto the floor.

"Phoenix, would you like to dance?" Christopher asked as he held out his hand.

"I would love to." Phoenix said with a smile.

"Brooke, you want to dance?" I asked Brooke nervously.

"Sure" she replied.

It was just a fun and fast song, but I was having so much fun just being with her. She twirled around in circles and I laughed.

"Brooke would you say that you like me?" I asked.

"Yeah Ryan I like you. I like you a lot." She replied.

I melted in side. She likes me! I wanted to jump up and down yelling she likes me! She really likes me!' But I didn't.

After we danced for a few songs, we walked over to the food table to get a drink.

"Brooke!" Shane said as he walked up to her. "Would you care to dance my lady?" He asked as he bowed.

A little much if you ask me.

"It would be my pleasure." Brooke said as he took her hand and they went out onto the dance floor.

They played B*Witched's song Never giving up.'

They seemed to be having a lot of fun dancing.

A little too much if you ask me.

But she's my girl friend, sort of.

"Ryan you want to dance?" Bernadette asked me shattering my thoughts.

"Well." I began and looked down at my feet and scuffed them on the floor.

Bernadette grabbed my hand and pulled my out onto the dance floor with a bunch of other kids jumping, spinning, singing alone with the song, and bumping into each other.

Just generally having a good time.

Bernadette was a really good dancer, only I didn't know how she could dance in those high

heals!

We all met back up at the punch bowl.

I looked over at Brooke and smiled. Then the room became quite as slow music came on.

I froze. Should I ask Brooke to dance? I asked myself.

Christopher was already ahead of me, but he and Phoenix were already out on the dance floor.

"Brooke, would you like to dance?" I asked and started to sweat.

"Sure Ryan." She replied with a smile.

We went out onto the gym dance floor with maybe fifty kids dancing slowly together. Very close together I might add.

I sort of got lost in the song, for one song I felt truly happy.

Nothing I could do could make me forget all the brutality I hade show at that battle.

But holding Brooke and dancing, helped me to forget it. I lost myself in the sound of the music.

I forgot it all. And just focused on being happy. Not on killing, saving people, even living

another day. Just on dancing.

The Nox and my parents left my mind, and I felt like I had let go of a ten thousand-pound weight.

I didn't ever want the song to end.

But it did, and I was back to my own grim life, and destiny.

I got to dance with Phoenix, although I no longer have any real feelings for her. It was just a fun friendly dance.

After the dance, before Brookes' parents came to pick her up, I kissed her lightly on the cheek and said, "good night."

"Ryan you take care, we'll need you to keep us together." She said with a smile.

"Who is us'?" I asked, wondered if she meant as in me and her starting a relationship.

"The Five United." She said as her mom and dad pulled up.

I waved as she got into the car and they drove off.

What a night, what a week.
