"THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES - THE STORY"
Leni's Role: Mrs. Barrymore
This version of the famous classic brings Dr. Watson to Baskerville Hall without Sherlock Holmes. One can enjoy this mystery and almost forget that Holmes will eventually appear to solve the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville.
What makes this story so interesting is that Holmes is only in a few scenes! And Watson is not really a klutz after all. And guess what? Sir Henry Baskerville actually helps Watson to analyze clues! Can you believe that?
Leni portrays Mrs. Barrymore, the housekeeper/cook of Baskerville Hall who is married to John Barrymore, the butler of the manor. Together they immediately look suspicious to Dr. Watson, because of their stoic mannerisms. And when they announce to Sir Henry that they have received a gift of a thousand pounds from Sir Charles' Estate, that really nails the lid on their coffins! At least to Watson!
Later on in the wee hours of the morning, Mr. Barrymore is found giving signals with a hand held candle to someone out in the moors. Sir Henry and Watson interrupt him and threaten to have him arrested if he does not give them an explanation. He refuses, but his wife appears out of the night shadows to offer the explanation. She has a mentally deficient brother that has been falsely accused of murder whom she and her husband have been protecting out in the moors.
When you eventually see this film you will really enjoy Leni's performance. This is film that has a lot of Leni screen time and dialogue too!
