Rivera helped run his families ranch in San Diego when he was a teen. He joined the Academy very young. He almost didn't graduate when one of his pranks made the dean of the school very angry. Since serving on board the Starfire he jumped through the ranks quickly. His courage and bravado has saved the ship more than once and proven him to be a fine officer.
