Making a Set of Horns

Please be patient while images are loading.

First off, this page will be based on my assumption that DM has 11 horns. That's one one each temple, one on top of the head, and eight forming the crown around the head. I have seen several pictures in which the temple horns are completely absent, and one of my toys has only seven horns forming the crown part. If anyone could clear this up to me, i would appreciate it. But i suppose it really isn't that big of a deal.

Click here for a photo of the horns i made. They're darker than they look in the picture.

Supplies

  • Several index cards or thin cardboard
  • Plaster or Glue
  • Tissue paper, kleenex, or paper towels
  • Play-dough (any color will do, but lighter is probably better)
  • Scissors
  • Two paintbrushes, one stiffer than other
  • Brown, tan, and white paint, acrylic
  • Ceramic fixative or hair spray

Step 1

Cut out horn shapes from the index cards, using the pattern on the next page. You will need two pieces for each horn since the tabs will be folded to form the base. Glue the sets of cutouts together as shown to the right. You will need eight of the curved horns, and three of the straight ones.

Step 2

Using plaster (or watered down glue) along with the paper towels (or whatever you're using), paper mache the horns. Use wadded up pieces to give them volume, but remember that DM has fairly skinny horns. Then cover it over and try to smooth out any lumps. Do not cover the bottom, but make the horns fairly solid. Repeat on all horns.

Step 3

After the horns have Thoroughly dried, cover them in a very thin layer of play-dough. This will give them an even texture and make them easier to paint.

Then, using the back end of the brush or a sculpting tool, scrape down the sides of the horns. Tis will give them a rougher texture so they will look more real. Allow the horns to dry for at least 24 hours. After this it is a good idea to apply one more very thin layer of tissue paper. This covers any craks in the playdough.

Step 4

Paint the horns brown. Allow to dry completely. Spray the horns with fixative.

Step 5

After the horns are dry, dry brush* the tan paint on. (*dry brushing means dip the brush in paint, then wipe it off until the paint is almost dry. This way it won't get into the crevices, and the horns will have an "antiqued" look to them. Use the stiffer brush.). You may want to mix some white or brown in with the tan, depending on the shade you have. This looks best layered, start with a darker shade and move toward white. Allow to dry, then spray again.

I used yellow in the illustration, this is to make it easier to see.
