Captain Anderson drummed his fingers on his command console in time to some half remembered tune. He always did this when he was nervous. His cruiser USS Timosthenes had been shadowing the intruder in the neutral zone for an hour now but it looked like that was about to end. He paid his errant fingers little heed knowing the tune would stop once battle was joined.
"Helm: Slow to tactical warp. Sensors: what's out there?"
The warp engine note changed as the cruisers heavy nacelles bled off energy from their high speed intercept.
"Sir! One ship. Definitely Klingon. Cruiser class - probably a D hull, variant unknown." replied Lieutenant Kettering, on the bounce as usual.
Anderson glanced at the strategic display under his dancing fingers. Federation units were chasing down contacts all across the sector. This was no isolated raid.
"Comms: Message to sector HQ: 'Klingon Cruiser sited in neutral zone. Timosthenes engaging' end with time, position and usual Idents."
The orders flowed now, calmly and efficiently. His fingers had gone silent. Battle had begun.
