(Updated 7/20) Here's a little bit of a dilemma. I have the next handful of post-August episode titles, but the schedule has NOT been released with the dates they will be shown. However, I'm very confident that Sept. 5 will be the first of five straight Saturdays with a new episode before ABC's football/other sports schedule gymnastics begins on Oct. 10. So, here's what I'm going to do until the schedule is released. For every two weeks where there SHOULD be a title release (and, as of 7/20, there SHOULD be titles released through 9/12), I'll post one title without an air date. If #22 doesn't get shown on Sept. 5 or 12, it will be the most shocking mis-read of scheduling tactics in all the time I've been doing PROAC.
LOS ANGELES SECTION: Here's where I'm going to list the upcoming air times for KABC-7 in Los Angeles. The nation's 2nd-biggest market has a somewhat-delayed Kids schedule, which puts the standard time for RPM at 12:30 and 1:00 on Saturdays. But being at that time puts it in the way of sports coverage more often. Here's what's coming up:
July 25 -- pre-empted for E/I recovery
SUNDAY Aug 2 -- 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. (Saturday's slots pre-empted by live X Games coverage at 1 p.m. Pacific time)
RED FLAG ZONE
This is a place where you can find upcoming quirks in the PR schedule and attempts to explain the inexplicable.
UPCOMING ABC KIDS SCHEDULE IRREGULARITIES:
Here's what's in store as far as disruptions of the usual two-slots-per-week PR schedule on ABC Kids, which now includes the plans for the first four months of 2009.
Sat Jul 25 -- National -- Both time slots pre-empted for E/I recovery
Sat Aug 1 -- L.A. only -- Both KABC slots pre-empted by X Games (PRRPM shown Sunday 8/2 at 3:00 pm Pacific time)
Sat Aug 22 -- West Coast only -- First time slot pre-empted for E/I recovery
*** (But the second time slot is a NEW EPISODE!)
Sat Aug 29 -- National -- Second time slot (both slots on West Coast) pre-empted for Little League World Series
We learned two things from the info in the May-August grids:
1) At least through Aug. 29, any week where the SECOND time slot is pre-empted on the West Coast will NOT have a new RPM episode. (Aug 22 has first slot pre-empted, second slot NEW)
2) There should be one national football pre-emption in October (I'm guessing Oct. 17 for the Oklahoma-Texas game) and one in November (I'm guessing Nov. 21 for the Michigan-Ohio State game). And, there's also a West Coast pre-emption on Dec. 5 for a 1:00 Eastern football game. Each national football pre-emption comes with one or two extra weeks of PR pre-emptions on the West Coast in order to make up the required E/I content.
HOLD ON. There's one more event I forgot about that puts ANOTHER crimp in the West Coast schedule. The Breeders' Cup horse races pre-empt the West Coast on Nov. 7. When you plot everything out, we're looking at -- hold on to your hats -- TEN STRAIGHT WEEKS of no RPM on the West Coast (Oct. 10 to Dec. 12). This is where it gets difficult. If they stick to the summer pattern of not showing a new episode in any week that's pre-empted on the West Coast, they'll show one new episode on October 3 and then not show another one until DECEMBER 19!
On the other hand, in the past few years when they weren't the ONLY outlet for PR and were running them on a 'second-hand' basis, they DID run 'new' episodes in the November and December weeks that were pre-empted on the West Coast.
In the PRNS year of 2003 when there were many more actual game pre-emptions, they doubled-up on new episodes in any open week after the British Open off-weeks in July, which got them to the November finale.
Do I know what they're going to do when they get into this mish-mash of pre-emptions? Seriously, I got no clue. The one thing I just CAN'T see them doing is letting the show go TEN WEEKS without a new episode. If they do that, the fandom will go NUCLEAR and we won't get the finale until Jan. 23, 2010.
Will they double-up episodes come September? There are five straight weeks (Sept. 5 to Oct. 3) with NO schedule irregularities -- before the 10-week Western wipe-out. Is that the time play a little bit of catch-up? The last time they showed two 'new' episodes on the same day was 7/12/08 with both parts of "Ghost of a Chance" from PRJF. It could be an interesting strategy to what is usually the start of a new TV season. But, ABC Kids hasn't made a major change to its schedule in ages.
Or, do they do what they did last year and trudge on ahead with the new episodes even though they won't be seen on the West Coast? I kinda wanna go with this option ... but with RPM being exclusive to ABC, how can they get away with it?
So, with very little confidence that I'm reading the tea leaves properly, here's my take:
What SHOULD they do? I can't figure it out. Really. If they do that five-week double-up, they'll be at episode #31 (one from the end) on Oct. 3 and then hit the 10-week chasm with no clear-cut place to show the finale.
What WILL they do? I really fear they're going to continue on a one-per-week schedule in those five clear weeks and then hit the brakes. Makes no sense, I know. But when does Disney make sense?
I really hope there's a big-time revelation when we get the last section of schedules, which should be at some point in late July or early August. All I can really say is ... stay tuned!
Also this year (2009) is the LAST year of the July pre-emptions for the British Open golf tournament. ESPN/ABC reached a new agreement with the event that puts all four rounds of live morning coverage on ESPN (cable) starting in 2010, with just some afternoon highlights on ABC.
