Local ABC treatment of PR

Many local ABC affiliates shuffle Saturday morning programming around to make room for local news, sports and/or infomercials. This page is intended to help many of you find when PR is airing on ABC.

February 2009: It rises from the ashes ... back to active status! With PRRPM being an ABC Kids exclusive, this chart is probably more viable than at any other time in PROAC history. Talk about proving the old saying "everything old becomes new again"! So, all 60 stations (in their new 2008-09 ranking order) have now been double-checked and updated in advance of the RPM premiere on March 7.

The spring isn't as difficult to track as it will be in the fall, when several stations change things up to accomodate football games. But, for now, this will be a reflection of how things are in Feb./March of 2009.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES: I don't know how current each of these changes is because I haven't looked up the info for the full chart in about two years. But here's what I've found in terms of major changes:

  • Los Angeles: WAS: On-time. NOW: Time-shift. Yes, the 2nd-biggest market in America has changed things up. They no longer follow the network schedule and show PR at 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. Pacific time. After a bunch of weeks that varied because of ABC's college basketball coverage, it looks like KABC has settled into a 12:30/1:00 Pacific time pattern. There's no way to know what will happen come football season. But once we get to October, there will be a boatload of weeks when the PR hour is pre-empted on the West Coast anyhow.
  • Charlotte: WAS: Time-shift. NOW: No-show. For the longest time, they shuffled the PR hour to Sunday morning but have decided to give viewers more news with their Sunday brunch.
  • Kansas City: WAS: On-time. NOW: No-show. Another affiliate that goes for more local news to pad the coffers.
  • San Antonio: WAS: On-time. NOW: Time-shift. Here's the most singular choice of other programming. From 11-noon Central time, they show an hour of Spanish-language programming to serve the Tejano community. PR is now at 5:00 and 5:30 a.m.
  • West Palm Beach: WAS: On-time. NOW: No-show. Not so singular here. More local news.
  • Harrisburg: WAS: On-time. NOW: Time-shift. Good thing I'm not planning to drive up and watch PR off this affiliate (like I did for the post-switch part of WF). The addition of a local news hour pushes PR to pre-dawn.
  • Albuquerque: WAS: Time-shift. NOW: No-show. Looks like an hour of real estate/home fix-up shows is a better choice for Sunday morning at 4 a.m.
  • Fresno: WAS: On-time. NOW: Time-shift. Another station that wants an hour of local news after ABC's Good Morning America. That pushes the E/I section of ABC Kids up an hour and slides PR to pre-dawn.

  • COMING APRIL 4 - Tampa: Just found a report that the Tampa ABC affiliate (WFTS) is adding three hours of local news on Saturday mornings beginning April 4. The times for the local newscasts will be 6-8 am and then 9-10 am. It looks like they're pushing the entire ABC Kids lineup -- including PRRPM -- back by an hour, going from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. But there's a small block of ABC Sports on that first day and WFTS's PR slots on that day are 1:00 for the first episode and 4:30 (after the sports stuff) for the second. But it sure suggests that 1:00 and 1:30 will be the regular slots. The April 11 listings seem to confirm that 1:00 and 1:30 will be where RPM will be in the new schedule.

And one other thing. The ranking of markets changes yearly and, since the last time I did this page, Richmond rejoins the list and Dayton drops off. The reason I mention this is that I want to mention the unusual change that's happened in Dayton. They actually moved UP from being a time-shift station to now being ON-TIME!

This is a disturbing rise in the number of the red no-show stations. There are 15 of the top 60 -- 25 percent -- of the nation's top markets where RPM will not be available.

There might be some places where you could pull in a station that's not that far away with an antenna and, if needed, DTV converter box. Like in DC, Baltimore is only 35 miles away. KC can get St. Joseph. West Palm Beach can get Miami. Little Rock can get Jonesboro.

BUT, if this really riles you up ... do something about it! Find your ABC affiliate's Web site and find the 'Contact Us' link. Look for a SNAIL MAIL address and send a card or letter (yes, I know it's radical, give the USPS something to deliver other than bills and junk mail!) to the Program Director of that station saying you are being deprived of your favorite show because of their inconsiderate decision to maximize station revenue.

  • KSTP, Minneapolis: I checked with the viewer (who e-mails me often) in the Twin Cities to check what KSTP shows this week to see if they're still stuck in the early 00's and remain the only major ABC affiliate that time-shifts on a one-week-delay basis. He rolled tape on the Feb. 14 airings. And yup -- they still either don't know about or can't be bothered to record the Friday night pre-feed. That officially makes them stupid or lazy.

  • Football: Several stations may time-shift PR to make room for sports programming (Sept-to-March, football and/or basketball) only to return it to its regular time slot for April-to-August. If you see a next to a city name that's on a green line, that means there might be a pre-emption (check your local listings) -- but not on an every-week basis.

DIGITAL TV TRANSITION: As you may have heard, Congress recently voted to delay the switchover of broadcast stations from analog to digital signals to June 12. It used to be February 17. But MANY stations are going ahead and pulling the plug on their analog transmissions on Feb. 17 anyhow. Some 400+ stations informed the FCC of their intentions to switch. The FCC had issues with about a third of those over concerns that entire cities would lose all analog service in one swoop. Those stations have addressed those issues, which has caused a few stations to wait until the FCC's June deadline to make the switch.

The ABC affiliates that switched on Feb. 17 are designated with a red dot -- . If you watch PR on these stations, you better be hooked up to cable or have your TV ready to receive a digital signal (either with a digital tuner in your TV or a DTV converter box), especially by RPM's premiere on March 7.

When the FCC announced the delay to June, some stations still wanted to pull the analog plug early, yet again. The one on this list that is doing that is KMGH in DENVER, which is going 100% digital on April 16. That station gets a yellow dot -- -- for the next two weeks until the actual switch date, when it will also go red.

If your affiliate is listed here and ends up doing something different, please e-mail me at burgundyranger@yahoo.com with the information. Obviously, I can't see these stations first-hand so I need your word-of-mouth to keep things accurate.

Green means that week's "new" episode is shown sometime that weekend.

Yellow means the station time-shifts the episodes into the early morning AND delays it by a week from ABC's standard schedule.

Red means PROO is not shown by that ABC station at any time. That means you break out the ol' rabbit ears (remember, the DTV conversion is coming up, so you need a digital tuner in your TV or a converter box) and pull in a station from the next closest station, wait for them to show up on YouTube or you download them.

Here's a sampling of how ABC stations in the nation's biggest markets generally handle Power Rangers RPM (all times local):
