PROJECT LIBERATION:
In 1994, the G.I.Joe team was disbanded by the United States government. At the time, the threat of terrorist acts against the democratic countries of the free world had become a thing of the past and the government could not justify the expense of the G.I.Joe team. To have such a massive response team made up of America's and some of the rest of the world's greatest soldiers on call all the time was believed to be a waste of resources and manpower. Even the terrorist organization known as Cobra had become a legitimate enterprise which sold state-of-the-art weapons and computer systems. Cobra had become a multi-billion dollar company who sold more arms than any other manufacturer in the entire world. Even some of the NATO countries had become good customers of Cobra. However, evidence exists that Cobra has sold large numbers of weapons to terrorist groups.
The members of the G.I.Joe team were reassigned and returned to their respective divisions of the military. The PITT was shut down and all the other G.I.Joe equipment was put into storage...just in case the need for it returned.
Then it happened. On February 25th 1997, the United States and it's allies became the target of the most massive campaign of terrorism the world has ever seen. Five simultaneous terrorist attacks on five different targets located in different parts of the world and carried out by five different terrorist groups over the course of two days. In all five attacks Cobra weapons were used and eye-witnesses report that the terrorists were supported by Cobra soldiers!
In Ireland, a British government building was taken over by IRA terrorists and a nearby British military base was reduced to rubble.
The twin daughters of the Egyptian president were kidnapped by members of the Islamic extremist group known as Al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya.
Aum Supreme Truth, the Japanese religious cult who was responsible for the release of the chemical nerve agent sarin on several Tokyo subway trains in March of 1995, killing 12 persons and injuring up to 6,000, has stolen an experimental nerve gas called "RCX 462" from a biological weapons base near Kyoto after a daring raid. They have threatened to release the gas on the civilian population of Kyoto.
The Alex Boncayao Brigade located in Manila, Philippines, claimed responsibility for a heavy attack on the Manila International Airport in which over 200 tourists were killed and 3 large aircraft were destroyed.
Night Creepers have taken control of the Bank of Zurich and are holding over 30 people hostage inside.
United States agents working undercover from within Cobra revealed that the wave of terrorist activity has been master-minded by Cobra Commander! Apparently, Cobra Commander had united all of the major (and many of the minor) terrorist organizations from around the world to fight their common enemy - the United States and its allies! Cobra Commander had used their hatred for the Western world to bring them together under the Cobra flag. The American agents said the project was code named Collective Purge. Never before has democracy faced such a menacing threat.
With Cobra's onslaught escalating, the United States government gave the order to put the G.I.Joe team back together and named the operation Project Liberation. General Abernathy, G.I.Joe's commander, had anticipated that G.I.Joe would be put back together and had all of the former members of the team (as well as some new recruits) standing by. The team was reunited and prepared for its greatest fight. This time Cobra was stronger than ever. Much bigger and much nastier.
