George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in Motihari, India, on June 25,
1903. His parents were members of the Indian Civil Service. After Orwell
completed education at Eton Public School in England, he joined the Indian
Imperial Police in Burma. He later wrote of his experiences in the book
Burmese Days.


His first book was Down and Out in Paris and London, a nonfiction
story of his hard times. He wrote three other novels as well as two
documentaries. 


Orwell’s two best known books are Animal Farm and 1984. These
novels show his distrust of any type of government. These two books
brought him his first and only fame. He died in London on January 21, 1950.
