He unwrapped a candy bar and poured Tabasco sauce on it. Realizing she was staring, she looked around the room. Well actually she looked at the bed. From far off, she heard herself asking- “So, what other human urges do you have?” She snapped back to the present, as Michael strolled towards her.

“Not if you were the last woman on earth.” Her heart sank.

Putting a hand to her chest, she stepped away from him. “Wow. I know I was asking for it, but that hurt.” For an instant he looked half way repentant, but it was gone before she was sure it had been there at all. Shaking off the sting, she sat down on the bed and took out her notepad. “Moving on from that, um… just so you know, I’m not getting an ‘F’ on this project, so we’re going do this again. And I mean for real, pally.”

“Okay.”

“Favorite ice cream?”

“Pistachio.”

“Pistachio. Right. Favorite TV Show.”

He shifted in his chair. “Win Ben Stein’s money.”

Maria gave him a look, but wrote it down. “Favorite book?”

“James Joyce, Ulysses.”

She put down her pencil and stared at him. “You have not read Ulysses.”

“’What incensed him more inwardly was the blatant jokes of those that passed it of as a jest, laughing immoderately, pretending to understand everything, the why and the wherefore, and in reality not knowing their own minds. Page six hundred and fifty- five.” He smirked a bit at her shocked look. “Told you, you wouldn’t understand.”

She looked at her paper for a long moment before meeting his gaze. ‘“You must look at both sides of the question, it is hard to lay down any hard and fast rules as to right and wrong but room for improvement all around. But with a little goodwill all round. It’s all very fine to boast of mutual superiority, but what about mutual equality?’” a slow smile spread across her face. “Page six hundred and forty- three.” It was her turn to smirk, and she did as he tried to collect himself. “Told you to give me a chance.”

He still looked surprised, but recovered quickly. “I have to admit, I’m surprised. I didn’t think you were the type that would read Ulysses.”

“Well, it was one of the hardest books I’ve ever read, but it’s also fascinating. There will never be another book like it. I love Joyce anyway- so I read it out of loyalty. I have like- three biographies at home, and a collection of his letters.”

“You do? Were they funny?”

“Some of them, especially those he wrote to other authors. He was able to laugh at himself.”

“I had to read it twice before I could understand the whole thing.” Michael admitted. She rolled over on her side and looked at him through lowered lids.

“Can I ask one little personal question?”

He sighed. “Shoot.”

“Why does it mean so much to you, that you know where you come from?”

“Because there has to be something better out there for me than Roswell, New Mexico.” She laughed quietly. He glared at her. “You think that’s funny?”

“No, I don’t. It’s just… when I was little I’d stay awake at night, and make up stories about my father. You know, who he was- what he was doing.” She snorted in disgust and he leaned forward, intrigued. “And they all ended the same way. He’d come up in a big limo, and take us off to some exotic place where we’d live like royalty.”

He smiled. “Substitute a spaceship for a limo and you know what I mean.”

“Yeah. I guess I do.” They each pondered their thoughts in silence for a while before she roused herself from her reclining position to stretch. “I’m getting pretty tired so…”

“Yeah,” he wiped his eyes quickly, while she pretended not to notice. “I don’t suppose we could share…”

She thought for a minute before standing up to face him. “Not if you were the last alien on earth.” Strangely, it didn’t feel as good as it should’ve, and for a minute he looked disappointed, and almost…hurt? But he made no objections and went about setting up a bed for himself on the floor.

Wondering why she felt so disappointed, she pulled of her shoes and curled up in bed, intent on getting some sleep. That idea lasted all of about ten minutes; as she listened to her traveling companion try to get comfortable on the floor. Maria sighed. Even if she acted like a ditz sometimes- or was rude to someone, she was actually a very nice person. And she knew she wouldn’t want to be sleeping on the floor, even if it did have carpet. So it was easy to lean over the side of the bed and swatted him to get his attention.

“Yes?”

“Get your ass up here.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Come on.”

“Would you like me to take off my clothes too, mistress?” he asked sarcastically.

She laughed, “Don’t tempt me. It’s just, if you’re not comfortable, I won’t be comfortable either. Besides, you need the rest as much as I do. So hop up.”

“Thanks.”

“No prob.” Extremely aware of their close proximity, it took them a while to relax. But soon the events of the day caught up with them, and they fell blissfully into sleep.

“We’ll just knock.” Liz said nervously.

Isabel rolled her eyes and used her powers to unlock the door. Hearing the door squeak open, Michael rolled out of bed and shielded his eyes as they turned on the light.

“Wha?”

“I came to save Maria, but I guess there’s no reason?” Liz answered uncertainly

“I see. No, no problem. And how about you Maxwell? Come to jump on the bandwagon?”

“No, actually- I’ve come to clean up your mess. Again.”

“Is she alright?” Isabel asked Liz.

“I’m sure she’s fine. Maria’s always been a deep sleeper.” She and shook her friend. “Maria? Time to wake up.”

“I’m awake!” They all jumped at the vehemence in her voice. “Why? Why are you here? I was just getting to sleep; I was having a nice dream. Go away.” Maria pulled the pillow over her head.

Liz looked apologetically at the others. “Of course when someone wakes her before she’s ready- she usually winds up in a bad mood.”

Michael leaned over her still form and whispered something in her ear. Abruptly, Maria propped herself up on her elbow and stared at him.

“Really?” He nodded.

“Wow.”

“Mike, what were you thinking?”

“I was thinking I couldn’t wait around for you two any longer. You both like Roswell, and you like your family, and you like your make believe life. That’s great Maxwell, keep pretending. But one day they’re going to find out about us. And everyone in this ro-” he stopped short as the door squeaked open behind Isabel.

“Everyone in this room, what?” Kyle asked.

“What are you all doing here?” The tension in the room had already been high, with the hostility vibes between Max and Michael- but this was getting ridiculous, and Maria was fuming. They shouldn’t have to deal with having to be afraid of Kyle on top of everything else. Suddenly a thought occurred to her, and she quickly scanned the room to see if anyone was looking at her. Fortunately, they were all staring at Kyle, who was, in turn staring at Liz. Hoping her plan would work, she held up the sheet, pulled off her shirt and tried to toss it discreetly behind the Jacuzzi. No one seemed to notice, so went back to observing quietly.

“Can’t anyone talk? What are you all doing here?” Kyle was annunciating every word, something Maria had always found extremely irritating. She cast a quick look at Michael, who seemed to be barely holding on to his temper.

Deciding it was all up to her, Maria sat up straight in bed and yelled, “If you must know, we were trying to have an orgy!” Everyone in the room turned and stared at her. Maybe she shouldn’t have said that quite so loud. “Go home Kyle. We already have enough to keep us busy. Besides,” she added as an afterthought. “I don’t think I know you well enough.”

They all stared at her. “Are you serious?”

She glared at the young Valenti. “Yeah. I mean, have you even looked at this place? What is it for if not a meeting place for wild sex? They stared at her. Sighing, she turned to Michael, “Will you hand me my shirt?”

He blinked. “What?”

“I think it’s on your side of the bed.”

Obligingly he got down and looked under the bed. “No, it’s not here.”

“Fine…” she grabbed his pillow and held it in front of her as she climbed out of bed. “Liz, will you hand me my jacket?” Dazed, her friend handed it to her, trying to keep her mouth shut. “Kyle, will you?” He stared at her. “Turn around! You’re the only one here that hasn’t seen what there is to see, and I’d like to keep it that way.” Still reeling from this recent turn of events, he turned around with no further protest. So did she, after she was sure he couldn’t see her.”

“Liz is this true?” Kyle asked.

Liz looked desperately at her friend. “Of course it’s true!” Maria snapped, buttoning her jacket. “You can turn around now. If you really have to.”

“Why are you the only one undressed?”

“The others were late; Michael and I decided to start without them. Sorry Liz. But you know how much I’ve missed him.”

“That’s alright.” Liz choked out.

She looked around the room. “Oh, I just remembered.” With a flourish, Maria pulled out her rather crumpled tank top out from behind the tub of love. “Ah ha! I knew it must be around here somewhere.”

“But you are brother and sister. That’s incest!”

“Hey, leave her out of this!” Kyle glared at Max.

“What, am I supposed to believe she was just giving you a lift?”

“Kyle, don’t be an asshole. This was going to be Isabel’s initiation, but frankly- I think you’ve managed to demolish the mood. Besides, Isabel’s here for Michael.”

Michael stared at Maria, a smile beginning to form on his lips. “She is?”

Maria smiled lovingly at him. “Yeah, it was supposed to be a surprise, but…”

“Oh honey, that’s so sweet!” He climbed over the bed and gave her a hug. When he let go, Maria gave him a peck on the cheek, and kept hold of his hand. “Do you remember where you threw my bra?”

He looked confused. “I have no idea. Are you sure you were wearing one?”

She glared at him “Of course I was wearing one! What type of girl do you think I am?”

“You’re disgusting.”They all turned back to Kyle. He was livid. Grabbing Liz by the arm he began yanking her to the door. “I’m taking you home Liz.”

“Kyle! Let go of me!” She ordered, pulling herself out of his grasp. “You don’t belong here. This is none of your business.”

He stared at her for a long moment. “I don’t know what I ever saw in you.” He stormed out, and they all listened in silence until they heard his car peeling out of the parking lot.

Unable to hold it in any longer, Maria burst out laughing. “Poor Kyle.” She managed to gasp, after getting herself somewhat together.

“I’m glad you think this is so amusing. Now everyone at school will think we’re sex fiends.” She shook her head at Isabel and pulled herself up to sit on the bed next to Michael.

“He won’t tell anyone. Trust me.”

“How can you be so sure? I mean, I do have a rep to uphold.”

Maria sighed, “Okay. Imagine you’re Kyle, and having to explain to all your jockerific friends that you got kicked out of a prospective threesome with your ex and Elle McPherson. He wouldn’t be able to live it down. And even if he changes the story, he still couldn’t tell- because he has to protect Liz. He still thinks he has to protect you, in his stalker boy ways.”

They all considered that for a minute. Michael draped an arm around her shoulder. “Orgy?”

“It was the only thing I could think of! You guys weren’t jumping in with any brilliant explanations. I think I kinda overdid it with the bra thing though.”

He shook his head. “No, it was good.”

“Thank you.”

They looked up at the others, who were still staring at them incredulously. “Maria…why were you undressed? And where is your bra?” Liz asked slowly.

Maria smirked at her “I already said. You guys were late.”
