The Silver Chair

Book 4 of the Chronicles of Narnia (publishing order)

Serpent

Eustace and his friend Jill Pole are running away from bullies at their school, Experiment House, when they open a gate that leads to another world. They find themselves at the brink of an almost endlessly high cliff. After Eustace falls in an attempt to prevent her from falling, Jill encounters the great Lion, Aslan. He tells her that that he has called her and Eustace into this world to find the lost son of Caspian, Prince Rilian. She is given four Signs to guide them in their quest, and blows Jill into Narnia as he blew Eustace. They find that almost fifty years have passed since the adventure on the Dawn Treader and that King Caspian is an old man. The two children, along with the marsh-wiggle Puddleglum, embark on a quest to the freezing North of Narnia and down into the Kingdom of Underland, ruled by an evil witch and her dark heir. . . .
