Fanfic Recommendations

Every once in a while I think I'll do some fanfiction reviews of stories that I've read. Majority will likely be Stargate SG-1 but not limited to this series. Likely there'll be some Birds of Prey, Law & Order/NYPD Blue, ER, Star Trek: Voyager, The X-Files. There may be other series that I will write reviews for. Majority of these stories will have a femslash angle to them of some sort. And most will have a rating of PG-R. I'm not big on NC-17 (unless there's actually a strong plotline, and it's not just a PWP story). I'll provide links to the story (and/or archive site where I found it) with the review. Also number of parts, if appropriate. Occasionally if the story has really good quotable lines, I'll include them.

Tonight I've got three in particular from Stargate SG-1 fandom (two are related). They are Exiles Gate & Champion's Gate from Elizabeth Carter and Lovers in Dangerous Times from Han.

Exiles Gate by Elizabeth Carter
There are 18 parts to this novella. All archived at Area52. The story starts out slightly in the future, and uses flashbacks to provide support to the storyline, occasionally referencing episodes. In the story there is an established romantic pairing of Samantha Carter & Janet Fraiser. To have an idea of the story, Colonel Sam Carter is the head of the SG-1 team, General O'Neill has taken over the command of the SGC after General Hammond retires. Teal'c and Daniel are still present and on SG-1's team. Lt. Cassandra Fraiser is now among the officers at the SGC and is bunk roommates with Captain Jennifer Hailey.

The SG teams have come to the aid of the Malakim, a race of angelics (picture appearance of 7-9ft tall humanoids with wings and hair of various different colours). The Malakim are being attacked by Goa'uld and have managed to severly injure the Queen of the Malakim, Novalis. With Sam's usual nature to save others without thinking much of her own safety, she pulls Novalis to safety and restores her life. Little would Sam know that that act would drastically change her life, as her own life and that of her family become intertwined with the Malakim.

This story is beautifully written. Occasionally there are spelling errors, but for the most part one is so caught up in the story that it is not distracting. There are wonderful characterisations and a well developed plotline. What the characters go through is often heartwrenching (there is plenty angst) and the author has a good grip on humour where appropriate in the story. Several familiar characters show up over the series of parts. A strong story. There are some wonderfully beautiful scenes that capture a lot of the essence of the characters. Finished Series

Champion's Gate by Elizabeth Carter.
This story starting with The Storm, the start of the second book, "Champions Gate" is the sequel to "Exiles Gate". It follows up on the events in that story and builds on the consequences of the actions of the Malakim, the SGC, the Calabim, the Goa'uld among others. It's a time for rebuilding, and some serious decisions must be made for the future of members of the SGC and the Malakim.

"Champions Gate" follows quite seamlessly from the end of "Exiles Gate". Again, the characters endure much angst, but also good times occasionally. While this review is not very detailed, it is intended as such, so that it won't spoil the reader to all the events that happened in the first story. Nine parts of this series have been posted so far. Incomplete Series.

Against All Odds by Han.
There are 5 parts to this series entitled "Lovers In Dangerous Times". Ratings for this story go from PG to NC-17, so if one is not a fan of more detailed love scenes this may not be your thing, however, the story is very well written and I'm very glad I stayed with it until the very end, though more than once I had tears rolling down my face (and not happy tears). Also this series deals with death of major character(s). This story also has Sam & Janet in an established relationship.

This story was well written. An emotional roller-coaster on occasion and the reader really gets into the characters. In many instances I could visualise the scenes (and not just the more detailed love scenes - actually if I recall correctly they weren't all that explicit. Nothing more than they show on NYPD Blue btw heterosexual characters). There is some good humour in the series and as I mentioned already - lots of angst. One of the drawbacks I found though was there wasn't a very smooth transition from the third story "Til Death Do Us Part" and fourth story "The End of the Road" - it was a little jarring. But that may be due to a three month difference in posting dates of the story and the author needed to get back into the flow of things, but it did even out. There were several twists to the story. Several times the author uses lyrics to songs to bring elements of the story together. It works well in most places. Finished Series

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I do not care if you do," Usiel shrugged. "I do not want anything more than beyond the Nephalim's death, and of course the slaughter of her child and wife. What you must understand is I am far too lazy to be a megalomaniac. I don't want this system or that system. I don't want to rule the galaxy; I really don't want any kind of that sort of power. It's far too much work. All that plotting, scheming back-stabbing not my banquet, I'm afraid." The black wings stretched as if to yawn. "Samantha Carter is far to dangerous to be left to live. I want things back the way they were, back when the World Symphony was our own. I am not greedy. I just want what's mine. If that means genocide so be it, I'd rather simply have Samantha sent to oblivion."
"If you have that power why me?"
"Oh, you're the means to Genocide. Weren't you paying attention?" Black wings arched in frustration. "You are truly not the brightest pigment in the firmaments are you, Osiris? Its no wonder your 'little brother' stuffed you in a jar!" (reference 4th season ep "The Curse").
From Elizabeth Carter's "Visitations" (part 9 of Champions Gate).
