Death Match Hittite Strategy

This is my Hittite strategy which I use to distribute ass whoopin's throughout the zone. Feel free to change the strat to your choice/preferences/etc. I also tossed in common abbreviations used for words, which are in parenthesis so that the novice player will understand what other people are saying when it comes to the aoe lingo.

The Pre-Game Thoughts:
Yes, I do consider different strats for hittite before the game, as my opponent(s) click in and reveal their civilization (civ) of choice. For instance, if my opponent was a fellow Hittite (hitt) I would prepare to concentrate on making the majority of my army elephants (eles) with catapults (cats) for support. If my opponent was Choson (cho), however, I would concentrate on heavy horse archers (HHA) as my main attack force, with few cats for support.

The Color (Player) Choice:
Try to be the color you enjoy the most. For some players, like me, it benefits your game. Red is my favorite color choice for aoe, partly because i'm slightly color blind and red stands out. The other reason is that red stands for passion and I play aoe with great fervor. =)

This is mainly a guide for the novice, but if you are experienced with aoe then you can skip to the bottom for direct instructions of my strat, which is titled "The Basic Rundown of Strat."

The Start:
Okay, this is where some small but devastatingly important choices come into play. You start out with a TownCenter (TC) and three Villagers (vills for plural and vill for singular). Click the towncenter and click the vill icon to create a new villager. Then while it is being created, take two of the vills and quickly make 7-10 more towncenters close/around the first. If you wish to save space, make them in a long, straight line. If you want to save time though, just make them in a circle around the original towncenter. With the third, original vill, click him and press "b" then "t", which goes into the build menu and selects tower. You are to place the tower (it is a sentry tower at this point) and place it generally 1/4 - 1/2 the distance between your opponent's base and you. NOTE: You can tell if the enemy is present, by when you attempt to place a building down and the icon is red, as if a gold mine or something was in the way. The tower is used to keep the enemy from building all over your land. Now, soon a towncenter will be constructed and that vill you made will be out. After the new tc is complete and the new vill comes out, make a new vill from each towncenter and make sure the original two vills are still working on the tc's. With this new vill, you are to make your upgrade buildings. You need to use the hotkeys, because manually takes too long. So, in this exact order type "b" then "g" for granery, "b" then "c" for government center, "b" and "c" again for another gov center, "b" then "m" for a market, "b" then "m" for another market, "b" then "k" for a seige workshop, and finally "b" then "s" for a storage pit. After you place each of these, make sure you get the vill to work on the granery first. Soon enough two vills will be created, and its time for them to go to work. Take those vills and type "b" then "s" for stable, and throw down 10 or so near that first tower you made. You'll notice as you do this some upgrade buildings will be done, what you need to do with those is in the granery upgrade to guard tower then to ballista tower when necessary, in gov centers research everything besides aristocracy, in markets research everything, upgrade stone throwers to cats then to heavy cats, and upgrade archer and elephant armor in storage pits. Keep making the vills and tcs, never stop with the vills. Take a few new vills and make a new patch of 10-12 stables a bit from the original patch, OR if you think you need archers put about 20 archery ranges down, preferably near a gold/stone mine, something useful to claim. Either way, be sure to add in a tower or two in front for a stationary recon deal. At this point you'll be starting to churn out eles/archers, and getting lots of vills so youll need houses. I suggest taking two vills and making enough for 200 pop on a hill, or in a straight line along your base to save space. Just make sure you save a LOT of room for farming. With the next few vills that come out, make about 5-6 seige workshops a little bit from your stables/archer ranges/towers, so that when you make cats they will not toss rocks on your buildings if the enemy goes there. So, now you have your military buildings constructed and you're on your way to kicking some ass. Unless of course you got painted severely and you're already dead.. but that's another text file =)

The Boom and Economy:
This is usually the 6-7 minute mark. Basically what goes on here, is you finish with your upgrades, start making eles/archers like crazy, and making lots of vills - hence the term, the boom. If the enemy is attacking at this point, don't hesitate to build some ballista towers for defense while your deploy your eles and archers to handle the threat. No matter what happens though, it is ABSOLUTELY cricical that you develop your econ in the 10 - 16 minute period if you wish to be a power house hitt. If you don't know how to see the time in the game, press the F11 key and it will appear in the top left corner of your screen. What comes into play with your econ is priority. First, you devote your vills to wood. At least 15. Then, you find some SAFE open space not too far from your towncenters and build a granery. Build another granery a bit from that one, repeat as necessary. The idea is to have 6 or so farms in a circle around each granery, and at least 24 farms so that equals 4 graneries to be built. After you have the farms up, you need to get 10 vills together and find a gold mine. Build a TC next to it, and mine away. Do the same with a stone mine. Feel free to mine 2-3 mines at once. Eventually the idea is to have around 80-90 vills. My average villager high is about 90. Don't worry about people that tell you having too many vills is bad. With hitt, it is very difficult to maintain a large, powerful army without having a booming economy =)

The Battlefield:
Okay, so you've got your econ going, and you've been having skirmishes with your enemy. Now that your econ is up, it is time to focus on taking the offensive. If you're fighting a hitt that is using archers/cats/towers as their force, what you need to do is get about 20-30 eles and about 15 cats together. Charge the enemy cats with the eles, then follow with the cats. The eles might take out some cats, but their primary focus is to divert the enemy's attention. While the enemy archers/towers are focused on your eles, you pull up with your cats and knock the hell out of 'em =) And yes, the ele decoy strat is very useful, it won me a 2 hour 2v1 game before =) Okay, hopefully your attack was a success and you are pushing the enemy back. If so, take about 6 vills and tower behind your army as it pushes onward. This way, it makes it harder for the enemy to gain its land back. If you gain control of a gold/stone mine while attacking, do not hesitate to build a few TC's around it and mine it up. Remember, the idea of playing hitt is being a powerhouse, and gobbling up all the resources you can. Fortunately, you have a big econ so you can afford to send in more eles/cats to fight the enemy. If the enemy is using eles/cats, you should use a few eles + lots of archers + few cats. Your eles take out enemy cats, archers take out enemy eles, cats just break everything. If the enemy has cents / cats, you need to make either a hell of a lot of eles + cats, or archers + cats. With eles, what you do is have about 5 eles charge the cents, then have the cats shell the cents. You're going to lose some eles, but you'll take out a good number of those bastard cents in the process =) Just try to use a combination of units that will counter the enemy's. And a little tip, try to look for ways into the enemy's base OR a way to flank your enemy (flank is to attack the enemy generally where they are weak/not expecting an attack/low on troops). If there is a small patch of trees in your way, just get a heavy cat and make it "Attack Ground" to smash the trees out of your way. And yes, having 15 eles and 5 cats mosey on into your base does hurt =) Key things to search for when attacking an enemy base, is wood areas that have been cut down. This obviously shows that the enemy has a number of vills chopping wood, just waiting to be slaughtered. Also, take out farms + gold miners, this makes it harder for them to build up a response force. And if the enemy still hasn't given up, take out all of his houses so he can't make more troops for a while. Most enemies will give up, but a few keep fighting. When you're flanking the base, try to get about 10 vills in too so you can tower up your tracks + make new military buildings to pump out reinforcements =).

The Long Run:
Well, if you haven't won yet, then you're probably in for a very long game. If you are like me, you will stay to the bitter, or victorious end. Remember to keep your econ top notch, never stop farming or getting wood, try to mine as much gold and stone as possible. In contrast to what most people say, there is NEVER enough resources to have.

Basic Rundown of Strat:
(1) Never stop making vills until you have around 80-90.
(2) Build 7-10 more town centers.
(3) Build a tower 1/4 to 1/2 the distance between you and enemy.
(4) Build Granery-2 Government Centers-2 Markets-Storage Pit-Seige Shop
(5) Just upgrade everything.
(6) Build 10-20 stables near your rushing tower.
(7) Build enough houses for 200 pop.
(8) Feel free to tower rush your enemy if the opportunity arises.
(9) Build 10-20 archery ranges and 5-10 seige workshops for support.
(10) Build a few towers in front of buildings for defense.
(11) Create as many units as needed, you be the judge of what is appropriate.
(12) Have 20 vills chopping wood. Make 20-40 farms. 10-15 gold miners. 10 stone miners. At least 15 vills traveling with your offensive force, to tower and/or build additional buildings for support.
(13) If you are playing a team game and your ally/allies need help, don't be a prude, help them out as much as possible. Your Choson pards need cats to take out enemy towers/archers, so don't hesitate to do so.
(14) Always look for a way to get behind your enemy/into their base and wreak havoc.

One Final Note:
Maybe running is cheap. But even though you may be a new schooler, you people reading this do not have to complain like one. Taking out an enemies base is pure strategy which dates back to ancient times, and making rules such as "no running" do none other than show the lack of skill in some people. Also, this is a DEATH MATCH which makes boats/priests acceptable. They are units too. You will never become an Aoe Master until you can comprehend this, the ability to play a game with every unit and have the paranoia of somebody sending 20 archers into your base. After all, if you didn't want somebody to run into your base, you'd have a more secure one, wouldn't you? =)

I hope this helped those in need of help =) Hitt is one of the best civs in age of empires, mainly for its flexibility, also for its compatibility. The force is strong within it, you could say.. lol.

If anybody has any questions/comments pertaining to this strategy or other ones that I wrote on this page, you may contact me on the Microsoft Network Internet Gaming Zone (MSNGZ) under the alias Seducer. Good luck on your journy to mastering this wonderful civ =)

Death Match Greek Strategy

Greek is one of those civs that while it has tons of potential, if just didn't catch on. This is mainly due to the aoe community's "ethics," which were created by new schoolers who played civs like Choson and got their asses beat for making only legions and later adopted by more new schoolers. These same weak minded "sheeple" (as coined by a local radio dj when referring to people who blindly follow others' rules) now piss and moan about why "running" is "cheap". I've been playing aoe for nearly 4 years. I was a second generation player. I will be damned if I'm going to let a third and fourth generation player, somebody who's only got 1-2 years of experience, tell ME what civ and style is "ok" to play with, just because they lack the ability to manipulate their opponents.

The Pre-Game Thoughts:
It's always important to discover your strong and weak points, as well as those of your enemy. Greek excells in seige, infantry and economics. I'm sure you're asking yourself, economics? WTF? How can you win with economics? Greek has all of the economic technologies, such as wood cutting bonuses, mining bonuses, farming bonuses, etc. In any event, get a MINIMUM of 90 vills. Mine and chop everything you can get your greedy hands on, and farm like hell. If your enemy is hitt, you'll need cats, heles and cents. You are going to have to play your ass off if its a good hitt, because they'll make a lot of heavy cats(hitt cats have 2x as much hit points as regular heavy cats) and archers(hitt archers have +1 attack). Use cents vs their cats if you can, while using cats vs their archers. Try to pull off a flank with heles, if you can disable (or distract) their cats and towers. By the way, watch out for a hitt archer rush at the start - that is a great way to screw over a greek fast. If you are going to vs a cho, expect the cho to make a LOT of legions and dozens of towers. Towers and legions are just about all a cho has. Priests will only do good vs cents. Make as many helepoleses (heles) as possible, tower like a madman, and have around 3 heavy cats. If you make centurions, do not be suprised to see them to get converted and/or shredded by choson towers.

The Start:
You start out with a TownCenter (TC) and three Villagers (vills for plural and vill for singular). Click the towncenter and click the vill icon to create a new villager. Then while it is being created, take the three vills and quickly make 10 more towncenters close/around the first by pressing "b" for build, then "n" to select Town Center. Luckily, "b" and "n" are right next to eachother on the keyboard, so it shouldn't be too tedious. If you wish to save space, make them in a long, straight line. If you want to save time though, just make them in a circle around the original towncenter. Now, soon a towncenter will be constructed and that vill you made will be out. After the new tc is complete and the new vill comes out, make a new vill from each towncenter and make sure the original three vills are still working on the tc's. It is important that you get a LOT of vills made, so keep three building town centers at all times. With this new vill, you are to make your upgrade buildings. You need to use the hotkeys, because manually selecting the buildings from the menu takes too long. So, in this exact order press "b" then "g" for granery, "b" then "c" for government center, "b" and "c" again for another gov center, "b" then "m" for a market, "b" then "m" for another market, "b" then "k" for a seige workshop, "b" then "y" for an academy and finally "b" then "s" for a storage pit. After you place each of these, make sure you get the vill to work on the granery first. Soon enough two vills will be created, and its time for them to go to work. Take those vills and type "b" then "k" for seige workshop, and throw down 10-15 near about 1/4 the distance from you to your enemy. In other words, somewhere safe on your side of the map where you will have time to build. You'll notice as you do this some upgrade buildings will be done, what you need to do with those is in the granery upgrade to guard tower then to ballista tower when necessary, in gov centers research everything, in markets research everything, upgrade stone throwers to cats then to heavy cats, and upgrade all of the infantry armor in storage pits if you wish to make centurions. Keep making the vills and tcs, never stop with the vills. Take a few new vills and make a bunch of academies OR more seige shops depending on if you wish to make centurions, preferably near a gold/stone mine, something useful to claim. Either way, be sure to add in a tower or two in front for a stationary recon deal. At this point you'll be starting to churn out military units and getting lots of vills so you'll need houses. I suggest taking three vills and making enough for 200(or 255 now that it is available) pop on a hill, or in a straight line along your base to save space. Just make sure you save enough room for farming. With the next few vills that come out. So, now you have your military buildings constructed and you're on your way to kicking some ass. Unless of course you got painted severely and you're already dead.. but that's another text file =)

My average villager high is about 120 for greek. If the pop limit is 200, having 120 vills lets you have about 45 heles, 25 cents and 10 cats.

As soon as your cats and cents take out enemy cats and at LEAST divert the attention of your enemy's towers, bring up the heles and use the 1.5 shots per second to rape their archers and whatever else is left. Okay, hopefully your attack was a success and you are pushing the enemy back. If so, take about 6 vills and tower behind your army as it pushes onward. This way, it makes it harder for the enemy to gain its land back. If you gain control of a gold/stone mine while attacking, do not hesitate to build a few TC's around it and mine it up. If the enemy is using eles/cats, you should use cents/heles and a few cats. Your cents and cats hitt the enemy cats, your heles shred the elephants. If the enemy has cents / cats, make sure you have a lot of towers then use a hell of a lot of cats to take out your enemy's cats, while using a few heles to tear up the cents. Just try to use a combination of units that will counter the enemy's. Death Match Choson Strategy

I am somewhat divided on my opinion of Choson. On one hand, I respect it's usefullness in pop 200/255 games. It has wonderfully strong infantry. My problem though, is that I have no respect for a civilization that bases its success on spamming units. If this game was in beta testing and they used pop 200 and the choson strat, I guarantee that Choson legions would have been nerfed due it making the game unbalanced.

The Pre-Game Thoughts:
It's always important to discover your strong and weak points, as well as those of your enemy. Choson has Legion, Priest and Tower bonuses. Therefore, it would obviously be wise to base your strategy on those three units. If you face a civ that can stack a solid defense, such as hitt, then I would recommend rushing early with legions and towers so that you can surround hitt then pound his stronghold with legions. It is VERY, VERY hard to hold off an attack against a good cho when you are surrounded by him. If the hitt makes elephants, get priests and convert them. If your opponent is Greek, again, rush and tower ASAP. If you let the greek build up cents and heles and towers, you're dead. End of story.

The Start:
You start out with a TownCenter (TC) and three Villagers (vills for plural and vill for singular). Click the towncenter and click the vill icon to create a new villager. Then while it is being created, take two vills and quickly make 8 more towncenters close/around the first by pressing "b" for build, then "n" to select Town Center. Luckily, "b" and "n" are right next to eachother on the keyboard, so it shouldn't be too tedious. If you wish to save space, make them in a long, straight line. If you want to save time though, just make them in a circle around the original towncenter. Take the third vill and start making barracks. Some prefer to wildly paint the landscape, others prefer to start off right in front of their tcs and expand outward. I prefer to put 20 or so barracks about 15-20 tiles away from my TCs, with a tower in front then expand outward as i get more vills. Now, soon a towncenter will be constructed and that vill you made will be out. After the new tc is complete and the new vill comes out, make a new vill from each towncenter and make sure the original two vills are still working on the tc's. With this new vill, you are to make your upgrade buildings. You need to use the hotkeys, because manually selecting the buildings from the menu takes too long. So, in this exact order press "b" then "b" for a barrack, "b" then "p" for a temple, "b" then "g" for granery, "b" then "c" for government center, "b" and "m" for a market, "b" then "s" for a storage pit. After you place each of these, make sure you get the vill to work on the barrack first. Soon enough two vills will be created, and its time for them to go to work. Take those vills and get them to join the original vill in making barracks. You'll notice as you do this some upgrade buildings will be done, what you need to do with those is in the barracks upgrade to long swordsmen then to legion when it's ready, in the temple research fanaticism so you can upgrade to legions, in granery upgrade to guard tower then to ballista tower when necessary, in gov centers research ballistics, in markets research everything, then research metallurgy in storage pit. Keep making the vills and tcs, never stop with the vills. Take a few new vills and make a bunch more barracks, advancing from your original patch, preferably near a gold/stone mine, something useful to claim.

The Boom and Economy:
This is usually the 5-10 minute mark. Basically what goes on here, is you finish with your upgrades, start making military units like crazy, and making lots of vills - hence the term, the boom. If the enemy is attacking at this point, don't hesitate to build some ballista towers for defense while you deploy a brigade or two to handle the threat. No matter what happens though, it is ABSOLUTELY critical that you develop your econ in the 5 - 16 minute period if you wish to have enough food/stone to make lots of legions and towers. If you don't know how to see the time in the game, press the F11 key and it will appear in the top left corner of your screen. What comes into play with your econ is priority. First, you should get about 10 vills on a stone mine. You need to get 10-15 vills together and start chopping wood for your farms and when you advance with barracks. Then, you find some SAFE open space not too far from your towncenters and build a granery. Build another granery a bit from that one, repeat as necessary. The idea is to have 6 or so farms in a circle around each granery, and at least 36 farms so that equals 6 graneries to be built.Eventually the idea is to have around 50-80 vills. The idea is to find balance, in having big enough of a military while having big enough of an econ to feed the military.

The Battlefield:
Okay, so you've got your econ going, and you've been having skirmishes with your enemy. Now that your econ is up, it is time to focus on taking the offensive. If you're fighting a hitt that is using archers/cats/towers as their force, you should send a crapload of legions (you'll be doing that a lot with choson) out. Charge the enemy cats with the legions, then follow with 10 or so vills so you can tower and rip apart the archers. If you wanted, you can bring up the heles and use the 1.5 shots per second to rape their archers and towers apart. Okay, hopefully your attack was a success and you are pushing the enemy back. If so, take those 10 or so vills and build barracks behind your army as it pushes onward. This way, it makes it harder for the enemy to gain its land back. If you gain control of a gold/stone mine while attacking, do not hesitate to build a few TC's around it and mine it up. Remember to gobble up all the resources you can. Fortunately, you have a big econ so you can afford to send in more legions/towers/priests/heles to fight the enemy. If the enemy is using eles/cats, you should use legions/priests. Your legions hit the enemy cats, your priests convert the elephants. If the enemy has cents / cats, again, try using legions to get enemy cats and use priests/towers to steal/rip apart enemy cents. Just try to use a combination of units that will counter the enemy's. And a little tip, try to look for ways into the enemy's base OR a way to flank your enemy (flank is to attack the enemy generally where they are weak/not expecting an attack/low on troops). Key things to search for when attacking an enemy base, is wood areas that have been cut down. This obviously shows that the enemy has a number of vills chopping wood, just waiting to be slaughtered. When you're flanking the base, try to get about 10 vills in too so you can tower up your tracks + make new military buildings to pump out reinforcements =).

The Long Run:
Econ wise, you'll need food and stone the most. Gold won't be as critical of importance for quite a while. While choson doesn't "need" as much resources as say, a greek, I would still recommend taking as much as you can so that your opponent can't. If anybody has ever played the board game Monopoly, im sure you've seen aggressive players who buy every single property they land on, so that they know YOU can't. The same thing can come into play with Age of Empires. Take everything even if you don't need it. That way, you KNOW that your enemy can't get it back.

Basic Rundown of Strat:
(1) Never stop making vills until you have around 50-90.
(2) Build 8 more town centers.
(3) Build Barracks - Temple - Granery - Government Center - Market - Storage Pit.
(4) Upgrade to long swordsmen, research Fanaticism, Upgrade to Gaurd Tower, Research Ballistics, Upgrade to Legion, Upgrade to Ballista Tower, Research Metallurgy and eveything in the market.
(5) Build 20-30 barracls near your base while saving space to make an econ.
(6) Build enough houses for 200/255 pop.
(7) Build 20 or so more barracks where you want to expand.
(8) Feel free to tower rush your enemy if the opportunity arises or use a blitzkreig style of rush with legions, towers and maybe even priests. Choson is great for rushing.
(9) Build a few towers right behind the front line of your barracks for defense.
(10) Create as many units as needed, you be the judge of what is appropriate.
(11) Have 10-15 vills chopping wood. Make 20-30 farms. 10 gold miners. 8-15 stone miners. At least 5 vills traveling with your offensive force, to tower and/or build additional buildings for support.
(12) If you are playing a team game and your ally/allies need help, don't be a prude, help them out as much as possible. If your partner uses a defensive strat with Towers and Archers, give him some legions to keep away enemy cats, and push the enemy back so he can advance his defense.
(13) Always look for a way to get behind your enemy/into their base and wreak havoc.

Death Match Babylon Strategy

Babylon is a truly underestimated civ. It has potential to be both a quick, deadly rush civ and also a slow moving, ferocious beast. The funniest thing to do with Babylon is to rush with priests and towers. It always cracks me up to see somebody call me a rookie when i kick their ass with priests/towers.

The Pre-Game Thoughts:
It's always important to discover your strong and weak points, as well as those of your enemy. Babylon has Priest, stone mining and Tower bonuses. If you face a civ that can get pretty strong, such as hitt/greek, I would recommend a tower and priest/legion rush. Versus a Choson, I would recommend rushing as hard as you can so you to at least deny the Choson the land it needs to expand on.

The Start:
You start out with a TownCenter (TC) and three Villagers (vills for plural and vill for singular). Click the towncenter and click the vill icon to create a new villager. Then while it is being created, take two vills and quickly make 10 more towncenters close/around the first by pressing "b" for build, then "n" to select Town Center. Luckily, "b" and "n" are right next to eachother on the keyboard, so it shouldn't be too tedious. If you wish to save space, make them in a long, straight line. If you want to save time though, just make them in a circle around the original towncenter. Take the third vill and a make tower, preferably on the enemys side of the map. After the new tc is complete and the new vill comes out, make a new vill from each towncenter and make sure the original two vills are still working on the tc's. With this new vill, you are to order it to help make the TCs. With the next vill, make upgrade buildings. You need to use the hotkeys, because manually selecting the buildings from the menu takes too long. So, in this exact order press "b" then "b" for a barrack, "b" then "p" for a temple, "b" then "g" for granery, "b" then "c" for government center, "b" and "m" for a market, "b" then "p" for another temple and "b" then "k" for a seige workshop. After you place each of these, make sure you get the vill to work on the barrack first. Soon enough two vills will be created, and its time for them to go to work. Take those vills and get them to build another tower. What you should try to do is build the tower right where the enemy placed it's military buildings, but doesn't have a vill there yet. The idea is to kill off his military buildings so he will get pushed back to his base. You'll notice as you do this some upgrade buildings will be done, what you need to do with those is in the barracks upgrade to long swordsmen then to legion when it's ready, in the temple research Monotheism so you can convert his buildings ASAP, fanaticism so you can upgrade to legions, in granery upgrade to guard tower then to ballista tower when necessary, in gov centers research everything, in markets research everything. Keep making the vills and tcs, never stop with the vills. Take a few new vills and make a patch of temples and/or barracks by your rushing towers, preferably near a gold/stone mine, something useful to claim. So, now you have your military buildings constructed and you're on your way to pissing off your opponent.

First, you should get about 10-15 vills on a stone mine. You need to get 10-15 vills together and start mining gold so you can make a lot of priests. After that you should get about 15 or so wood cutters and start chopping. You'll need wood for your military buildings/cats. Then, you find some SAFE open space not too far from your towncenters and build a granery. Build another granery a bit from that one, repeat as necessary. The idea is to have 6 or so farms in a circle around each granery, and at least 18 farms so that equals 3 graneries to be built. Eventually the idea is to have around 60-90 vills. The idea is to find balance, in having big enough of a military while having big enough of an econ to feed the military.

The Battlefield:
Okay, so you've got your econ going, and you've been having skirmishes with your enemy. Now that at least part of your econ is up, it is time to focus on increasing the strength of your offensive(if you rushed), or taking the offensive(if you didn't rush). If you're fighting a hitt that is using archers/cats/towers as their force, you should send a crapload of legions out. Charge the enemy cats with the legions, then bring up your own cats and smash their towers/archers. Follow with 10 or so vills so you can tower. Okay, hopefully your attack was a success and you are pushing the enemy back. If so, take those 10 or so vills and build barracks/temples/seige workshops behind your army as it pushes onward. This way, it makes it harder for the enemy to gain its land back. If you gain control of a gold/stone mine while attacking, do not hesitate to build a few TC's around it and mine it up. Remember to gobble up all the resources you can. Fortunately, you have a big econ so you can afford to send in more legions/towers/priests/cats to fight the enemy.

Econ wise, you'll need gold and stone the most. You won't really need food that much, unless you intend on making a lot of legions. Hoplites will fight harder than Legions, due to it's attack and armor levels. However, Hoplites have less hit points so they will die quicker if shelled by cats. If you want to rush, use towers and priests and maybe even some legions/hoplites. If you want to play the slower, stronger role then use legions/hoplites in front of cats with priests and towers for backup. Babylon archers are decent but not worth the price.

Basic Rundown of Strat:

(1) Never stop making vills until you have around 60-90.
(2) Build 10 more town centers.
(3) Build a tower in enemy land, if you wish to rush.
(4) Build Barracks - 2 Temples - Granery - Government Center - Market - Seige workshop.
(5) If you want Legions, Upgrade to long swordsmen, research Fanaticism then upgrade to legion. Upgrade to Gaurd Tower, Research Ballistics, Upgrade to Legion, Upgrade to Ballista Tower, Research everything in market temples and government center.
(6) Build enough houses for 200/255 pop.
(7) Build 10-15 temples/barracks where you want to expand/attack.
(8) Feel free to tower rush your enemy if the opportunity arises or use a blitzkreig style of rush with legions, towers and maybe even priests.
(9) Take advantage of Babylon's tower bonus (double hit points).
(10) Try to convert your enemy's military buildings ASAP if you rush.
(11) Have 15 vills chopping wood. Make 20-30 farms. 10 gold miners. 8-15 stone miners. At least 10 vills traveling with your offensive force, to tower and/or build additional buildings for support.

Death Match Sumerian Strategy

Sumerian is pretty much a weaker Hittite. Unit-wise, they are definately a worthy civ- they offer Cents, HHA, Heavy Catapults(with +50% firing rate), War eles, and a half decent war ship, the Trireme. Tech-wise, they are an OK civ, but the lack of Coinage and Craftsmanship, among other techs, takes its toll.

The Pre-Game Thoughts:
It's always important to discover your strong and weak points, as well as those of your enemy. Sumerian has village, seige and farm bonuses. The villager bonus won't matter much, unless you intend on having your vills being attacked. The Seige +50% firing rate is great for taking out archers/cents/towers. The double farm production bonus is (obviously) good for giving you more time to execute military campaigns without having to check back on your farms.

The Start:
You start out with a TownCenter (TC) and three Villagers (vills for plural and vill for singular). Click the towncenter and click the vill icon to create a new villager. Then while it is being created, take two vills and quickly make 10-12 more towncenters close/around the first by pressing "b" for build, then "n" to select Town Center. Luckily, "b" and "n" are right next to eachother on the keyboard, so it shouldn't be too tedious. If you wish to save space, make them in a long, straight line. If you want to save time though, just make them in a circle around the original towncenter. With the new vill, make upgrade buildings. You need to use the hotkeys, because manually selecting the buildings from the menu takes too long. So, in this exact order press "b" then "g" for granery, "b" then "c" for government center, "b" then "c" for another gov center, "b" and "m" for a market, "b" then "m" for another market, "b" then "k" for a seige workshop and "b" then "s" for a storate pit. After you place each of these, make sure you get the vill to work on the granery first. Soon enough two vills will be created, and its time for them to go to work. Take those vills and get them to build a bunch of archery ranges rather close to your tc and/or stables a in front of the ranges. If you want to make just archers, build the ranges and do an archer rush. Take out unbuilt enemy buildings. When the enemy starts to tower against your rush, take more archers and rush his towncenters. If you want to use only eles, build stables with a few towers mixed in. If you want both (which would be best) then I recommend an archer rush to shake up your enemy, then use eles / archers as an attack force with cats. You'll notice as you do this some upgrade buildings will be done, what you need to do with those is in the in granery upgrade to guard tower then to ballista tower when necessary, in gov centers research everything, in markets research everything, in seige workshop upgrade to catapult then heavy catapult when necessary, and in the storate pit upgrade everything. Keep making the vills and tcs, never stop with the vills. Take a few new vills and make some more archery ranges, stables and/or seige workshops by your original patch, preferably near a gold/stone mine, something useful to claim. At this point you'll be starting to churn out military units and getting lots of vills so you'll need houses. I suggest taking three vills and making enough for 200(or 255 now that it is available) pop on a hill, or in a straight line along your base to save space. Just make sure you save enough room for farming. Again, if you archer rush, use eles and cats right when he starts to counter. Why, you ask? Because chances are, he will use towers and archers to counter your archers. Eles and cats will counter his counter, and you're likely to make him promptly crap his pants and give up land.

No matter what happens though, it is ABSOLUTELY critical that you develop your econ in the 5 - 16 minute period if you wish to have enough food/wood/gold to keep with the eles/archers/cats. If you don't know how to see the time in the game, press the F11 key and it will appear in the top left corner of your screen. What comes into play with your econ is priority. Find some SAFE open space not too far from your towncenters and build a granery. Build another granery a bit from that one, repeat as necessary. The idea is to have 6 or so farms in a circle around each granery, and at least 30 farms so that equals 5 graneries to be built. Then get 30-40 vills chopping wood. You should get about 10-15 vills on a gold mine. Then 10 or so on a stone mine. Eventually the idea is to have around 90-120 vills. The idea is to find balance, in having big enough of a military while having big enough of an econ to feed the military.

The Battlefield:
Okay, so you've got your econ going, and you've been having skirmishes with your enemy. If you're fighting a hitt that is using archers/cats/towers as their force, send out eles to charge the cats + divert attention of enemy archers towers. Bring up your 150% fire rate cats up and shell the enemy. Follow with 10 or so vills so you can tower. Okay, hopefully your attack was a success and you are pushing the enemy back. If you gain control of a gold/stone mine while attacking, do not hesitate to build a few TC's around it and mine it up. Remember to gobble up all the resources you can. Fortunately, you have a big econ so you can afford to send in reinforcements. If the enemy is using eles/cats, you should use eles/cats. Some might think its better to use archers, but if you use archers then you're going to have a lot harder of a time trying to get the hitt's cats taken out. If the enemy has cents/cats, again, use eles/cats. Have the eles mix up with the cents, then shell the cents with cats. Just try to use a combination of units that will counter the enemy's. And a little tip, try to look for ways into the enemy's base OR a way to flank your enemy (flank is to attack the enemy generally where they are weak/not expecting an attack/low on troops). When you're flanking the base, try to get about 10 vills in too so you can tower up your tracks + make new military buildings to pump out reinforcements =).

The Long Run:
Econ wise, you'll need food and wood the most. Cents may work against the choson, if you use archers with them. You can rush with archers if you like. But, after the rush I for one would rather use eles instead of archers as my attack force.

Basic Rundown of Strat:
(1) Never stop making vills until you have around 90-120.
(2) Build 10-12 more town centers.
(3) Build Granery - 2 Government Centers - 2 Markets - Seige workshop - Storage Pit.
(4) Upgrade to Gaurd Tower, Research Ballistics, Research everything in government centers, markets and storage pit and upgrade to catapult/heavy catapult.
(5) Build enough houses for 200/255 pop.
(6) Build 10-15 archery ranges and/or stables where you want to expand/attack.
(7) Build at least 5 seige workshops by the military buildings with 10 or so more stables/ranges.
(8) Have 30-40 vills chopping wood. Make 30+ farms. 15 gold miners. 10 or so stone miners. At least 10 vills traveling with your offensive force, to tower and/or build additional buildings for support.
(9) If you are playing a team game and your ally/allies need help, don't be a prude, help them out as much as possible. If your partner is cho he will need archers and cats for support.
(10) With a powerful civ like Sumerian, you might not need to use flanking/running tactics like a cho, for example. Instead you're likely to "use your weight" and knock the enemy off his feet.
