Mars Obliquity

Hi everyone, "obliquity is the angle between a planet's equatorial plane and its orbital plane." The changes in Mars' obliquity have had a dramatic effect on its climate over the ages. Mars is now in the middle of an obliquity cycle. Click on Mars to read a dated but relevant article about the effects of the change of Mars' obliquity ("the tilt of its spin axis") over long periods of time on its poles and climate. Note, "Mars' obliquity is known to increase and decrease between about 15o and 35o over a 124,000-year cycle (unlike the Earth's tilt which slowly rocks through a range of only 4o thanks to the stabilizing tugging of our large moon)."

Click on planets to view the relative obliquity and retrograde motion of the nine planets.

Click on Chaos to view the change in Mars' obliquity over the past 400 million years.

Click on Poles to read about the advantages and disadvantages of potential polar landing areas. The article points out That Mars' poles receive sunlight 24 hours and 40 minutes a day during the summertime.

Enjoy and have a nice day.
