Cannibalize

The Wheel of Justice, brought to you and me by:

A Real Vampire

Nicolas Claux was a self described cannibal/vampire. He stated that before his jailing, he often times participated in necrophilic relations at a mortuary where he worked. Claux also gave a few stories of eating parts of the dead bodies.

Despite the supposed rarity of cannibalism, it is not at all that far away from eating another animal. There is a brain disease that can occur from prolonged cannibalism. This disease is much like mad cow disease. However, in times of desperation, eating your dead friend could seem like a practical and wise decision. While most cannibals in the "civilized" areas of the world are often insane or murderers, in some small areas of the planet, on remote islands, there are groups of indiginous people who willingly participate in eating other people. For centuries, eating other humans had been a tradition for these native islanders. While it was not done on an everyday basis, it was something they would do regularly.

Jeffrey Dahmer (forgive the spelling) is a prime example of modern day cannibalism performed by someone who is mentally "off". There is no exact excuse for why he cannibalized. His upbringing was reasonably normal and for the most part he seemed like a decent man. Somewhere in his mind though, he found it interesting to try to make sex slaves by drilling holes into young men's skulls. Often times that would kill them and, not knowing what he could do with the bodies, he decided to turn to cannibalizing them. Some bodies were disposed of in vats of acid but some others were dinner. When the police finally caught up with Dahmer, they found body parts and heads in his fridge as well as evidence that, indeed, they had been used for dinner.

While Dahmer and Claux sound like crazies, they are not alone in their cannibalistic ways. Self cannibalism occurs all the time. What is self cannibalism you ask? Well, it is the act of eating one's own scabs, skin, blood and/or nails. At some point in time, we have all sucked the blood from a wound and a few of us have eaten our scabs or bits of loose skin from around our nails. Eating boogers and earwax may also fall under self cannibalism. While nail biting is a common habit, nail eating is less so. I recall my mother telling me the story of a young lady who had bit and ate her nails for years. When the girl was afflicted with appendicitis and had her appendix removed, the doctors found it full of pieces of fingernails. It sounds like the stuff of urban legend to keep kids from taking up the bad habit, but it was actually a true story.

So the next time you go to chew off that hang nail or suck the blood from your hurt finger, take the time to think about just what it is you're really doing...
