Alice Mourning
"You told me death was glorious.
You told me there was no higher honour that to die in battle.
You told me you weren't scared, Kiawen.
You were.
I saw it in your eyes.
Wouldn't anyone be scared when confronted with something that just shouldn't be?
We couldn't win. It was impossible. I see that now. We had no chance.
But back then, I thought we could.
And we did.
And that's why it was so unfair.
You told me never to cry for the dead.
I never cried for you. I was just angry. And alone.
I'm crying now, Kiawen.
I'm crying now.
This is my character Alice, from my novel in process, Blood Magic. Kiawen was one of her earliest tutors and friends. This scene doesn't happen in the book, but more light may be shed on who Kiawen was, Alice's early life, and how he died. Or maybe not. You never know.
I like Alice. She's so much fun to draw, even if it requires some re-thinking, because she's all angles and lines and tallness. I hardly ever do anything in monochrome shading, though, so this gets biscuits and specialness.
