Movie of the Week!
- Movie: Mona Lisa Smile
- Actors: Julia Roberts (Katherine Watson), Julia Stiles (Joan Brandwyn), Kirsten Dunst (Betty Warren),Maggie Gyllenhall (Giselle Levy), Ginnefer Goodwin (Connie Baker), Topher Grace (Tommy Donegal)
- Production Company: Columbia Pictures
- Why we like this movie: Because I'm a bit of a feminist I loved Julia Roberts role in this movie as art teacher Katherine Watson. She got in there and she shook things up, changed the way the girls thought and stood up for her beliefs. Given the film was set in the 1950's there was a long way to go where women's rights were concerned. I also loved the fact that the student that hated her the most and caused her the most problems (Betty Warren), was the one who came to love her the most. It was very intriguing to see how women were bred and raised to be housewive's and that actual classes were taught at Wellesley College for this purpose. This movie is a must see, it's both funny and serious with a lot of poignant lessons to be learnt and will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
- Flavourite Part: My absolute favourite part was related to the budding romance between Connie and Charles which reminded me a bit of my love life lol. All that drama, all that humour! My favourite scene was when connie busted into the boys dormitory so she could find charles after she heard his girlfriend deb (with the big "teeth") had been spotted with someone else.
- Flavourite Character/s: Connie and Charles of course they were so cute! I loved Giselle for being so bold and having a sexual wit about her. I absolutely loved the college's nurse Amanda Armstrong who was just so cool and funny and very open about being a lesbian and speaking out against female oppression (she willingly gave out contraceptives to girls on request). I also loved the main character Katherine for her unorthodox teaching methods and also Nancy for her reactions to katherine's actions (she was the conservative one).
- The Soundtrack: Music Supervision by Randall Poster, a wonderful soundtrack with a great version of "Santa Baby" by Macy Gray and includes heaps of well known artists including: celine dion, chris isaack, tori amos, barbara streisand (doin a remake of charlie chaplin's "Smile"), Mandy Moore, Elton John, Seal (doin theme song), Alison Krauss and Kelly Rowland!
