The once and future ANTICHRIST

The popularity of the Arthurian legend does not stop with movies, countless books, and videogames. Obsession, like that of a pimple-faced Dungeons and Dragons geek, can lead a fan of the legend into conspiracy theories and paranoia. This paper is about those geeks; or, more relevantly, their obsession and delusions of Merlin, the Holy Grail, and King Arthur.

Searching “conspiracy” on google will result in millions of pages with subjects ranging from JFK and the Freemasons to the CIA’s involvement in mass kool-aid suicides and mind control. The search of “King Arthur” will again yield millions of pages; from “finding your heraldry”, to the “official” Arthur Pendragon page in the United Kingdom. Searching for “Holy Grail” will give similar results, as will “Merlin”. (“Merlin” will also pull several thousand product pages, including many computer programs.)

“King Arthur conspiracy” only shows several hundred results. “Holy Grail conspiracy” marks the book Holy Blood and the Holy Grail and under fifty pages dedicated to such conspiracies. “Merlin conspiracies” left only a handful of sites, one of which is relevant to this paper’s subject.

King Arthur, Antichrist extra-ordinaries

The site Prince William is the Antichrist, formerly King Arthur is the Antichrist, details Arthur’s role in the approaching Armageddon, which will begin in the year 2006. The page even goes so far as declaring the end of the world in 2012, maybe 2021 allowing another option in case of misinterpretation of the 3-D Mayan calendar. (Before continuing, it may be beneficial to justify the use of this website, as well as all of the others. The information is radical and most definitely fictitious and for these reasons the sites’ content are not being used as fact; rather, the details of their contents, and more importantly, the massive following each of these sites command, are presented here to show the amount of interest and belief this facet of “modern society”, internet conspiracy sites, and the forty year old men in their mothers’ basements that publish them, still give the legend of King Arthur.)

Prince William is the Antichrist, PWA, says that King Arthur has returned, as Prince William of England, and will fill the biblical role of the antichrist during the end of the world. William will gain control of the world through unification in much the same fashion as Arthur unified Britain: “Merlin had him crowned the King of Britain. This led to a rebellion by eleven rulers which Arthur put down.” www.kingarthursknights.com/ PWA describes William/Arthur gathering all of the world’s greatest “knights” to him, much like King Arthur’s Round Table, then, a peacemaker after WWIII, he will be worshiped as Christ, and thus fulfill his role as the antichrist: “You are already witnessing the first signs towards the [Great Peacemaker] Antichrist, yet in order for there to be a Global Man of Peace, there must first be a grievous and extremely destructive and murderous war” www.angelfire.com/clone2/antichrist666 King Arthur is only a part of this end of the world prophecy; PWA goes on to speak of many other factors, many of which are interesting, all of which are insane. The nice thing about crazy peoples’ conspiracy websites is that there are always a lot of links to other, even more paranoid, sites.

William Henry, the Holy Grail, and the H-Bomb

“In 1934 president Franklin D. Roosevelt sent agents to Mongolia to search for the reincarnated Christ and the Holy Grail, the secret of transmuting elements. Eleven years later, American scientists involved in the Manhattan Project exploded the first atomic bomb. Did the Secrets of atomic weaponry come from the Holy Grail? When we split the atom in 1945 did we split the word or life-force of God?” www.williamhenry.net

Oddly enough this page is not as alone as it seems it should be. When Jesus dined with his twelve apostles at the last supper, he broke bread, and gave wine, and told the apostles that it was Jesus himself that they were drinking and eating. Because of the transformation of blood to wine, many people believe the Holy Grail holds an alchemist’s ability to change the elements. (If it was the Grail that held this special ability, how did the bread transform? Not to poke holes in thousand year old beliefs, or weaken William Henry’s case, but doesn’t it seem that the process might have been a little more Jesus, the savior of mankind, a little less cup?) There are many organizations around the world still searching for the Grail. Www. Grailwerks.com details some of these organizations, and tells about their ongoing quests. Conspiracies arise, like those of William Henry’s, concerning the grail still today. There are even still large, and secret, organizations still searching for the Holy Grail today, such as the Knights of the Templar. The Freemasons, another secretive group believed to be involved in many of the great conspiracies of the day, may be involved in the Holy Grail conspiracy through the Knights of the Templar and the 2nd and 3rd palace.

Not all conspiracies involving Arthur and his legend are as large or as sinister as the previously discussed theories. Two smaller theories deal with the origins of Arthur, and Merlin’s role in the construction of Stonehenge.

Arthur, the Celtic Bear god.

Not everyone agrees on the origins of Arthur. Not everyone agrees that Arthur was human. The website, www.britannia.com/history/arthur/kamyth.html purposes that Arthur evolved from the Celtic Bear god, and that his legends are similar to those stories of the popular Greek and Roman gods: “The name Arthur itself appears to derive from the Celtic word Art, meaning "bear". Could Arthur, like so many other Celtic gods, be merely a personification of the many reverred animals of the wild?” www.britannia.com Somehow, over time, Arthur’s quest seemed to become more and more human, until Arthur was no longer a god, but a human being.

Merlin and the Giant’s Dance.

Most experts agree that Stonehenge predated Merlin by 2000 or more years. Fionabroome.com does not. They offer a theory that Merlin may be nothing more than a job title, or perhaps someone who is constantly reborn: “was Merlin an eternal figure, alive in at 2000 BCE when the blue stones of Stonehenge were placed? Is "Merlin" a job description, not an actual name? Is Merlin someone who has lived many lifetimes, each time assuming the name Myrrdin, or Merlin?” http://www.fionabroome.com

It takes a special kind of stupid to dedicate so much time and effort to so much bullshit. But, there is something about conspiracy sites that is addictive. They comfort a person by making them feel the world is far more interesting than it actually is. That’s why so many of these sites have links to Dungeons and Dragons web rings, and fantasy pages, and more conspiracy sites; it’s a form of escape for the participants. At least it’s physically healthier than crack or heroin…physically.
