Scream (1996)

"Do you like scary movies?" -Killer's Voice

Scream is what started the sudden horror hype in the 1990's. Scream centers around high school students in the town of Woodsboro. The film opens with Casey Becker, a teen, getting terrorized by a menacing phone voice while at home alone, and she is eventually stabbed to death and her parents find her hanging from a tree. The town is shocked at the tradgedy and are on a hunt for the killer.

Sidney Prescott, your average teenage girl, begins to be plagued by problems during the chaos. A tabloid reporter won't leave her alone and is trying to link the murder of Sidney's mother years ago to the Casey Becker killing, a masked killer is attacking her in her own house, and she begins to suspect her boyfriend may be the one who's after everyone.

Over the weekend a big party is held, and Sidney decides to go and hang out with her friends to ease her nerves, but the killer has made it to the party too, and is targeting Sidney's friends. Who is the killer and why are they killing? Well the movie surprises us a bit at the end when the killer, or should I say killers are revealed.

There are some cool death scenes, Wes Craven always does a pretty good job with his movies. Despite a few cheesy effects (example: Tatum's death in the garage door), the death scenes are pretty realistic I guess. There are lots of stabbings mostly, and a couple of other methods of murder, but the knife is the dominant weapon.

Scream is pretty good for a slasher, but come on, it's not the greatest thing ever. I think this movie was a little hyped up, but nonetheless it's still a pretty good slasher movie. And it's also better than it's sequels.
