The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"This road is not a blue line, it's a dotted line, if it's even on the map at all!" - Lynne

The Hills Have Eyes is one of those classic '70s films that many horror fans know well. It starts off with a normal family vacation, the Carter family is traveling across the desert en route to California. They stop at an old gas station, and then head on their way.

Little do they know, they are on a government airforce base area, and there is a clan of deformed people living in the hills. After wrecking their car, the father heads off back to the gas station for help, while the rest prepares to spend the night in their trailer. The father arrives at the gas station, and asks the old attendant for help, and instead of help he tells the story of his deformed son who he left in the desert to die.

And suddenly, a deformed being slaughters the old man right in front of Bob. From then on the cannibalistic clan moves in on the Carter family, wreaking havoc and killing anyone in their paths. After kidnapping their older sister's baby, Brenda and Bobby must fight back in order to save their's and the baby's lives.

The Hills Have Eyes is one of those gritty, violent horror films to come from the '70s era, and it's rawness reminded me a little of Last House on the Left, also directed by Wes Craven. It's weird to me how Craven went from making these low-budget, gritty horror films to making the Scream series. Don't get me wrong, I like Scream, but the types of films are a lot different.

Overall, The Hills Have Eyes is a raw and gritty tale, with a scary atmosphere, a lot of violence, and a good story. It's not perfect, but it's pretty close. Definitely a cult classic, and surely one of Craven's overlooked films. I'm also really excited for the upcoming remake.
