Tru Calling Returns on FOX tonight
FOX has never been one to make wise decisions when it comes to their television programming.Putting great shows such as "Dark Angel" and "Fastlane" on Friday nights which is typically date, drink, get stoned or all 3 night for 90+% of it's targeted age group was certainly not a wise move. and Indeed both shows were sent to their graves. Early Last year a great new show called "Tru Calling" premiered.
The show starred "Buffy" alum Eliza Dushku as a morgue worker named Tru Davies who had a calling of sorts, or a gift. She could be contacted by the dead, and then sent back in time to alter the scenario which caused their death ultimately sparing the person from dying on that fateful day.I dug the show from the start. It's witty down to earth characters, and very unique and intriguing storyline both kept me glued to the set. FOX had also wised up,putting the show on Thursday nights, with it's only real competition being the slumping "WWE Smackdown".The show only made it through one season and due to it's low ratings (or what in FOX execs eyes were low ratings), FOX gave it the early axe. The worst part about it all? Well the shows first season ended on one hell of a cliffhanger, in which we found out Jason Priestleys character Jack was really Trus enemy who weilded powers similar to hers, and also that her father was the one responsible Trus moms death, as well as he was in cahoots with Jack.Numerous fan mail and support poured in to FOX wanting the shows immediate return, to no avail. Rumors even flew of the show being picked up by another network possibly, the WB and SCI-FI channel had both been mentioned as possible new homes for the series.
("Tru Calling" returns tonight at 8pm)
Alas, none of those options ever fully materialized.FOX however was willing to give the show a final bow out so to speak."Tru Calling" was going to premier in season 2 with 6 final episodes that would wrap things up for good. Fans (myself included) were happy that the show was going to atleast get some closure before FOX 86ed it. Then FOX in one of it's usual swerve moves, decided to not air the shows final 6 episodes, and dumped it for good. In a move to make way for "North Shore" and most of all "Point Pleasant".
(The cast of the recently cancelled "Point Pleasant")
Now here we are on March 31st,2005. and "Tru Calling" is making it's return to television with a 2 hour season premier that will pick up right where season 1's cliffhanger left off. The shows final 6 episodes will all be aired. Wheres "Point Pleasant" you ask? Well the "Omen"-ish/Beverly Hills 90210-ish horror/drama was canned about a week ago, opening the door for "Tru Callings" return. We can only hope that FOX has learned something from all of this. They obviously canned "Tru Calling" way too early and proof of that is the low ratings for "Point Pleasant", a show which I liked by the way, but doesn't hold a candle to "Tru Calling" in my opinion. Even though "Tru Calling" is returning tonight, a few questions remain unanswered. Will this be the ultimate END-for "Tru Calling"? Rumors have bene flying about what will become of the show if it does well in these upcoming 6 episodes? Will it get a third season? Time will tell. Those questions can be left for later.Right now, lets enjoy the moment.Trus back for the time being, and the huge fan outcry and fan support aimed at FOX to return the show, is what made it all possible.
