My Thoughts:And so...now we see why remakes of classic horror films is a bad idea.
Review:"The Omen" pretty much crashed and burned in theaters and it serves the makers of this film right. "X-MEN 3" which had been out for 2 weeks now beat "The Omen", and after taking in a cool 12 million on 6-6-06, the movie quickly plummited to fourth place and finished there for it's 6 day debut, which stretched to June 11th. So the question now becomes, what made this film so bad? Well how's about everything? Let's start for one with the fact that this is a remake of "The Omen". One of the creepiest and most terrifying films ever made. Some films you can't remake people, let's be honest here. Remaking "The Omen" is like some guy deciding to remake "The Godfather". But being the fair guy that I am, I gave this movie a chance despite it being a sacrilegious remake of a perfect horror film, and it sucked just as I expected it to. The original "Omen" was not only scary, but it was intriguing and very gripping. Two things the remake wasn't. In fact, no one really seemed to actually want to be in this movie. Watching Julia Stiles, and Liev Schrieber in this film was the most painful part, besides the film itself. Neither of them looked happy about being a part of this movie. Their lackluster and unenthusiastic performances showed that. I mean Liev was really intense in "Scream 2" and "Scream 3", and in those movies there was a guy in a ghostface mask weilding a knife. Far less of a threat than satan's spawn possibly being inside your freaking kid! But yet somehow, Liev as Robert Thorn just couldn't seem to find the time to get excited about what was going on. Even if him and his wife's life were in danger. Then there's Julia Stiles, who does her best to play up her role as Katherine Thorn. Stiles shocked me, I gotta admit, she really worked her ass of in this movie to make that role hers and do the best she could, but still I didn't feel that intensity from her that a woman who suspects her son is evil incarnite should have. The real star of this movie is little Seamus Davey Fitzpatrick. He's no Harvey Stephens but he certainly created a new Damien to be afraid of. The kid had the facial expressions down pat, especially in one scene where the family is on their way to church..much to Damien's dismay. In fact the scene where Damien freaks out in the car as it draws closer to the church is about one of the few great scenes this movie has to offer. But the majority of the movie is kept too calm, too slow, and too lacking of emotion and fun by the robotic script. David Seltzer penned the script but I shouldn't be surprised because, this is after all the guy who wrote "Dragonfly" with Kevin Costner which is about as much of a snoozer as they come. Pete Postlethwaite is about the only really exciting thing about this movie, as he shows up from time to time to warn Robert of the danger his son Damien poses to him and his wife. Postlethwaite really does an excellent job of playing the scared to death priest, who avoids the old rambling priest horror movie cliche, and very clearly and to the point explains who and what Damien is to Schrieber's character. Another veteran who pops up in the film is Mia Farrow, who makes the most of her scenes as the creepy, sinister looking Ms. Baylock. Too bad we don't see much of her in this film though, as her screentime is kept pretty much to a minimum which hurts the movie considerably when your two leads are sleep-inducing. "The Omen" (2006) pretty much gets everything wrong that the original got right. It's lacking in suspense save for a scene or two, lacking in scares, and even the musical score falls far short of the brilliant musical score of the original film. That coupled with actors who it was obvious..had a horrible script to work with, and you've got yourself 2 solid hours of boredom. If you do believe there's a god and a satan, after seeing this movie, you'd probably be right to think both of them are pissed off about this remake. It was that bad.
Pros:Seamus Davey Fitzpatrick turns in a pretty good performance as Damien, Mia Farrow does very well as Ms. Baylock.
Cons:Bad script which hampered the performance of Stiles and Schrieber. Lack of scares, suspense, or much action.
Overall:Terrible remake, waiting for dvd would be my advice.
