[Primeval]
Plot:A news team is sent to South Africa to capture and bring home a legendary 25-foot crocodile. Their difficult task turns potentially deadly when a warlord targets them for death.

My Thoughts:The crocodile saves it from being a complete waste of time.
Review:So someone at Hollywood Pictures decided -- "Hey, let's take a funny black guy, a boring stiff white guy, a hot white chick, and a big ass crocodile, stick them all in Africa, and make something entertaining out of that for 90 minutes". Unfortunately, Hollywood Pictures attempt to do so was quite the failure. "Primeval" involves a reporter (Dominic Purcell) and his cameraman (Orlando Jones) who are sent to Africa to get a story on a legendary killer known as "Gustave", a huge gigantic crocodile who has killed hundreds of Africans. Brooke Langton as Aviva Masters decides to tag along on the expedition and once in Africa, "House of the Dead" boat captain Jurgen Prochnow shows up as the "muscle" so to speak. Prochnow's character in "Primeval" is not near as badass as his U-Boat captain character in "House of the Dead", plus he lacks the huge cache of guns that Captain Kirk had. Too bad too, since during the trek through Africa, they have numerous encounters with the 25 foot crocodile known as Gustave, and could really have used all of those guns. "Primeval" really only has one thing going for it though, the crocodile himself. It's quite an amazing beast to watch rip people to shreds and spread carnage and mayhem on screen. I assume the same fx people who worked on "Lake Placid" were behind this croc as well because we get NO cgi here folks. This croc looks extremely real on-screen. The problem is, Gustave is pushed to the background for a story about tribal warfare in Africa, it's reprecussions, and how no one is bringing the attention to the issue that it deserves. It's quite bizarre, considering this is or was supposed to be a horror film, and while I appreciated the humanity aspect of the plot, it was focused on too long. The fact of the matter is, I paid to see a crocodile devour people left and right, which is not what I got. Dominic Purcell's lifeless performance didn't really make things any better. You would think his boring snoozer of a Dracula character from "Blade 3" just walked into this movie as a mortal and all of a sudden became an entirely new character. Brooke Langton does what she can with her role as mostly the obligatory female eye candy of the picture, and Orlando Jones doesn't annoy as much as one would expect as the comic relief/american black guy. But the dialogue is written so poorly that the chatty scenes betwene the characters fall grossly flat, and during the movie you just wish that Gustave would show up to snack on somebody again. Luckily, the tribal war subplot does provide some much needed action in alot of the films slower scenes. It seems that along with Gustave the hungry, bloodthirsty croc, the presence of the 3 americans has also drawn the ire of a locla warlord, who kills without mercy. You would think with a vicious tribal warlord and a gigantic hungry gator both roaming the African jungles, this movie would be 90 minutes full of non-stop action. But it really isn't, and things don't get really good until the final act where the warlord, Gustave, and what's left of the exploration crew are all caught in the middle of a rainstorm with the what's left of the crew trying to survive, the warlord trying to kill them, and Gustave looking for more to eat. Quite frankly "Primeval" is the most disappointing killer gator flick I've seen in the last few years. While it beats the hell out of anything alligator related on the SCI-FI Channel....for a movie with a story like this, there should've been more action, more croc kills, more everything. In the hands of the right writer or writers, this idea could've worked. But John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris just do not know this genre very well. This is a genre of film, the kilelr croc movie that needs constant action, humor, and gore...along with graphic scenes of lost limbs and ripped apart bodies. While these things are present in one or two scenes, they are sadly absent the rest of the way. Hence, it's not at all hard to get bored with this movie really quickly.
Positives:Nice fx work on Gustave the killer croc. Jones is funny sometimes. Langton is nice to look at. The African setting was nice, unique, and different for a horror film.
Negatives:Horrible script, lack of action, the characters have zero chemistry, and bad acting by Dominic Purcell.
Overall:Wait for dvd, maybe there will be a few interesting deleted scenes for you to "chew on", no pun intended.
