My 2 cents on The Devils Rejects
I am one of the few it seems who liked "House of 1000 Corpses". Most I talk to label it as a "TCM" ripoff or a 1 hour and 30 minute Rob Zombie music vid. I however saw it as none of these things. I saw it as a return to true horror movies. It had twisted characters, who were the antagonists and the focus of the film, it had that old 80s feel to it, used a twisted local urban legend as its plot device, and had a great setting. Nowadays, we get teen angst, the burbs, and some masked killer who pops in and out of the film from time to time to kill off some girl whos at odds with her boyfriends-friends. Now here comes it's sequel, entitled "The Devils Rejects". While I will be seeing this film, my 2 cents is that it seems to go way off course from the original. For starters, this one will focus on the family being on the run from the law. Which is understandable after the hideously dastard acts they performed in the first film. However, Captain Spauldings brother will be introduced, Otis apparently will get laid, and Baby will be taken advantage of making her the victim for once. All of this will apparently play out as sort of a western/horror. After the way part 1 ended, and after getting to know these characters, this isn't exactly the route I was expecting part 2 to take. 1 Climaxed with the remaining kids being dumped underground, one burned as sort of a sacrifice, and of course Dr Satan and his merry band of weirdoes which include Earl/the professor/the axe weilding robot. One would think after all of these questions get posed at the end, as well as whether or not Denise lived, and did Jerry become one of Doc satans experiments, that part 2 would focus on answering these questions and adding a few more characters. The way it's sounding now, would make one believe that most of these questions won't be answered. The main ones being about dr satan, his relation to the family, the families relation to each other, including Spaulding, and how did Earl Firefly wind up being one of Doc Satans experiments? Perhaps Rob mustered up too many questions at the end of "H01K", and now, even he can't answer them all in part 2. I would've loved to see Denise be in part 2, as a sort of vengeance seeker towards the Firefly family. After all, they tortured her mentally, physically, and killed her father and friends. Theres certainly enough material there to make her into a young woman bent on the total destruction of the fireflies, and whos willing to do anything and form any sort of allegiance to get it. Doesn't look like she will be in part 2 though, which is a bit of a disappointment. The reality is, that speculation really is pointless when it comes to a movie like this."The Devils Rejects" opens next year some time. Guess we'll just have to wait till then to see just how many questions Rob can answer from his original film.
