Thalassemia is the most common, inherited single gene disorder in the world. Thalassemia is an inherited disorder. That means that you can only get it if both your mother and your father carry the recessive gene. People who have the disease Thalassemia, are not able to make enough hemoglobin in their red cells. Hemoglobin is the part of a red cell, which picks up oxygen from the lungs and carries it to all parts of the body. All the tissues of the body need oxygen. Oxygen cannot get to all parts of the body without enough hemoglobin in the red cells. Tissues are starved for oxygen and cannot function properly.
