The Book of Exodus - Notes for 33:1-36:38

Exod. 33:1-6 The purpose of Jehovah was that Israel would continue on, in spite of their sins.

Exod. 33:5 GOD decided to withdraw from their midst, and such a terrible notice made the people strip themselves of their attire. That I may know what to do to you is given to understand that for awhile they wouldn't know what the final verdict would be.

Exod. 33:7 The tabernacle of reunion: Place where GOD's presence was manifested. It was a kind of portable tabernacle, on a small scale, where communication with GOD could be established in special times, as when the principal tabernacle was being constructed. It didn't have, however, any of the utensils, and was different to the one mentioned in 27:21 (see note). Moses placed it a great distance from the encampment, because of the episode of the molten calf.

Exod. 33:12-17 This completes the scene that remained in suspense in verse 5.

Exod. 33:14 See section 3 of "TRUTH IN ACTION" at the end of Exodus.

LITERARY RICHES
Exod. 33:14 rest, nu'ach; Strong #5117: To rest, be seated; be placated or quieted; to be secure; be quiet; dwell peacefully. This verb appears around 65 times; for the first time in Genesis 8:4, where it says that the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. Nu'ach is the verb that describes the Spirit of GOD which rests upon the Messiah (Is. 11:2), or on the 70 elders of Israel (Num. 11:25). The name "Noah" ("Provider of rest" or "consoler") derives from nu'ach; see Genesis 5:29. In this reference, the presence of GOD offers rest to his people, that is, his presence comforts, consoles, quiets and calms us.

Exod. 33:15 See section 3 of "TRUTH IN ACTION" at the end of Exodus.

Exod. 33:18 Moses desired to see the glory of GOD, that is, the intimate part of GOD's nature.

Exod. 33:19-23 GOD couldn't accede completely to Moses' request. However, he revealed that he could be understood in part through his action in history and through the various characteristics associated with his name (v.19; see the notes for 3:14 and 34:6,7).

Exod. 34:6,7 In a more complete definition of his name, Jehovah (see the note for 3:14) is attributed eight characteristics that were manifested to the people of Israel. These had been put into manifestation, on the other hand, in the incident of the molten calf.

Exod. 34:10-28 The covenant is renewed.

Exod. 34:13 Break their statues: They were wooden images that symbolized several gods.

Exod. 34:14 The first two commandments are reinforced through the renewed covenant.

Exod. 34:18 See the note for 12:1.

Exod. 34:19,20 See the note for 13:2.

Exod. 34:21 See the note for 20:8.

Exod. 34:22 See section 3 of "TRUTH IN ACTION" at the end of Exodus.

Exod. 34:22 See the note for 23:16.

LITERARY RICHES
Exod. 34:27 made, karat; Strong #3772: To cut, cut in pieces, grind, divide, reduce, make a covenant. This verb appears some 300 times in the Old Testament. It generally means to cut something or divide something through cutting. But its most important usage is in the phrase that is commonly translated as "to make a covenant". Karat was the most appropriate verb in this case, due to the cutting of sacrificed animals when a covenant was inaugurated. For a good illustration about the agreement on a "covenant" see especially Genesis 15:7-21. Circumcision, another manner of cutting, is the covenant that admits a Hebrew man into the congregation of the LORD. In the New Testament, the eternal covenant was made when the lamb was immolated by the people. See Hebrews 9:15; 10:10-22.

Exod. 34:29-35 The splendor in Moses' face manifested the acceptance of his leadership by GOD's part, in contrast with the earlier rejection that he had received from Israel (see the note for 32:1-6). It doesn't tell us why Moses covered his face with a veil. According to Paul, it was so the Israelites wouldn't see "to the end of that which had been abolished" (II Cor. 3:13).

Exod. 35:1-40:38 GOD's Abiding Presence With an Obedient, Worshiping Community (HBH) Exodus concludes with Israel's response to GOD's offer of forgiveness. Without delay the work of tabernacle construction was underway (35:1-40:33). When it was finally completed, all according to the explicit instructions of the LORD and through the wisdom of His Spirit, the building was filled with the awesome glory of GOD (40:34-38). By cloud and fire GOD revealed His presence among the people of Israel whether the tabernacle was at rest or in transit to its final earthly dwelling place in Canaan. Exod. 35:1-40:33 A repetition of what is related in chapters 25-31, save that in place of a mere description of the tabernacle and its content, now it speaks of its construction. During approximately 300 years the tabernacle would be the focal point of the religious life of Israel, until it was replaced by the temple of Solomon. See the note for 25:9.

Exod. 35:1,3 See the note for 20:28.

Exod. 35:4-9 See the note for 25:2.

Exod. 35:10-20 Emphasis is made on the readiness of the people to work and the presentation of offerings (v.22).

Exod. 35:20-29 See section 5 of "TRUTH IN ACTION" at the end of Exodus.

LITERARY RICHES
Exod. 35:27 ephod, 'ephod; Strong #646: Ephod, a ceremonial chalice or tunic, a priestly vestment that probably extended from the shoulders to the waist. An extended part, called "the mantle of the ephod", that was joined to the greater part, had a piece that reached to the ankles. The ephod was stitched with a rich ornamentation and decorated with a chestpiece that exhibited several precious stones. It would be sewn, in a very complicated way, with linen cloth. It also had a woven belt and two gold chains that served to secure two onyx stones with the names of the tribes of Israel. The breastplate itself held 12 precious stones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. In this way, the high priest carried over his heart the names and concerns of the 12 families of Israel.

Exod. 35:30-36:1 See the note for 31:3.

Exod. 35:30-35 See section 4 of "TRUTH IN ACTION" at the end of Exodus.

Exod. 36:2-7 The construction of the tabernacle ended free of debts because of the disposition of the people.

Exod. 36:8-19 See the notes for 26:1,2 and 26:7-14.

Exod. 36:20-38 See the notes for 26:15,16 and 26:26.
