The Process

In order to discover what is inside your product and gemstone, follow the steps listed below

            PRODUCT ANALYSIS

  1. You should have brought your product (lotion, shampoo, etc.) with you to the computer lab
  2. Look at the back of your product and locate the list of ingredients
  3. Click on the following website to www.chemfinder.camsoft.com to really find out what is inside your product
  4. In the blank box, type in the name of one of your compounds (one of the ingredients) (For example, you type "citric acid")
  5. If the database has your ingredient, scroll down to discover the chemical formula and write down the name of the compound and its chemical formula (You write: Citric Acid -- C6H8O7)
  6. Find out the chemical formula for another 2 compounds.  Remember to write both the name and the formula on your note-taking sheet.
  7. Using this information, complete your mixture analysis chart and follow-up questions.
     
  8. GEMSTONE ANALYSIS

  9. You now must complete research on your assigned gemstone.
  10. You need to collect information about the different physical properties of your gemstone as well as its chemical formula (ex. CaCO3).
  11. Visit any of the following websites:

  12. When visiting this websites, look for information about your gemstone.  You MUST have information about the gemstone's color, streak, specific gravity (SG), luster, and hardness.  You should also find 2-3 interesting facts about your gemstone.  Make sure to write this information on your note-taking sheet.

    PRODUCT OR GEMSTONE COMMERCIAL

    This is where you get to dazzle us with your creativity, talent, and artistic side!

  13. You must create a written advertisement (i.e. a magazine ad) trying to convince people to purchase your product or gemstone.

  14. You advertisement must be written and have both color and illustration.

  15. Look in magazines for examples of creative advertisements!

  16. Like all advertisements, you must make true statements about your product and/or gemstone.  So you must tell the world exactly what elements and compounds make up your product so that you are not fined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  17. Your ad must have (1) name of product/gemstone, (2) realistic picture/drawing, (3) slogan (you want to be convincing), (4) the elements that make up your product/gemstone, and (5) the use of your product/gemstone.

  18. BONUS: You will receive bonus points if you present an oral commercial in front of the class in addition to your advertisement.
