About the Thalians
WHAT IS A THALIAN? Where are they to be found? What do they do? Why do they do it?
Is it really possible to have so much fun without being arrested?
There is no such thing as an "average" Thalian. Some members have been professional
actors or have progressed on to such dizzy heights. Many are members of other groups as well and
some may even be considered as quite normal during the hours of daylight. But when added together,
the Thalians are a self-supporting group of stageophiles who usually put on three main
productions and occasionally, smaller events each year (but not always) at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon.
Not being afraid to travel or for that matter, to have a good holiday into the bargain, the
Group has also staged three productions at a small theatre in Penrith, Cumbria. We are an enthusiastic
bunch who, apart from producing plays, have a busy social life together. It's not all the roar
of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd.
We are always on the lookout for new people with their own ideas, so whatever your age (between 16-106 for starters),
we will make you very welcome. There is far more to being a member of a theatre group than
acting - there are always directing, technical, artistic and multiple backstage skills to be
learned and honed to a fine degree. If you don't like the idea of having to learn lines or actually
appearing on stage, then remember that there are people in the Group who view a script as not
something to be learned, but something that must be covered with scribbled, technical and incomprehensible notes
to the extent that the actual text has long since been lost to view.
Backstage credits reveal people dealing with costumes, continuity (otherwise known as the Prompt), publicity, set design
and construction, programme design, poster design, miscellaneous mindless anic - no sorry, that's
the Director again. The list may not be endless, but the end of the list is certainly far enough
down.
If any of the above appeals to you, please think about joining the Group. We meet
from 8pm-10pm on Tuesday and Fridays at the Laindon Community Centre.
