Yosef Horol

Born in 1929 in Odessa. In 1960, while a college student, he was arrested and charged with organizing and leading anti-Soviet youth protests, and the organization of nationalist groups. He was sentenced to 6 years in the Gulag, released in 1966 and in 1969 managed to leave the USSR for Israel.





Nathan Tsirulnikov

Born in 1910 in Mogilev, Belarus, he joined an underground Zionist organization in Leningrad in 1956 and in 1959 organized the first ulpan in this city. From 1960 he started receiving newspapers, books and Hebrew-Russian dictionaries from the Israeli Embassy. That same year he was arrested, charged with the Zionist activities and sentenced to 1 year in jail. After his release he continued fighting for his right to emigrate, but didn’t succeed till 1971 when he left the USSR for Israel. He died in 1983.
