The Lettered Olive,  was designated the official shell of the State by Act No. 360, 1984. 

*  Dr. Edmund Ravenel
(1797-1870).:

*From Charleston, South Carolina

*One of the first noted   conchologists

*Named the Lettered Olive shell 

*Was friends with Edgar Allen Poe

 Dr. Ravenel had an office at 52 Meeting St. 

 *The Lettered Olive is  prolific along the South Carolina Coast.

*The scientific study of shells is called conchology.
  
*A person who studies conchology is a conchologist!
