Planers

Pratt & Whitney Planer

Here are some pictures of my "new" Pratt Whitney and Co. 16x30 inch planer.

This pictures shows a set of replacement gears installed on the crossrail lift mechanism. These were donated to the cause by Mr. Larry Galvin of Oregon. Thanks Larry!!

This picture shows the #32 stamped on the down slide. It is stamped on the machine in several other places as well. I am wondering if it might be the machines serial number.

This is a picture of the first test cut, hand powered, because the drive system still need some repairs.

These pictures are of a post 1870 planer owned by Mr. John Stubbe of Madras Oregon. John also supplied details of the crossfeed ratchet on his machine so that I could duplicate it for my Planer.

Compare the next two pictures. They show the difference in the cross feed and belt shifter mechanisms that are a result of the patent issued to F. Pratt in 1869. The top picture is of John's post 1869 planer, the bottom one is of my pre 1869 planer

These next two pictures show the "new" cross feed ratchet installed on my planer "Thanks John!!"

This the temporary drive system used to run the planer for the first time in many years. Lots of work still to be done, but at least the table goes back and forth!

This is a picture of a test piece that I checked on the surface plate. This was not even trying hard to get a nice surface!
