Naxos
Diary.
Fri
3rd Aug
We travelled to the island of Naxos and again found our accommodation
at the port. It was Naxos Camping and back to the similar accommodation
that we had in Rome. We had a walk into town and bumped into some
friends who travelled to Santorini with us last week. We had dinner
and drinks with them that night and then retired to our little bungalow.

After a sweltering night shared with hundreds of mossies, we decided
to try and get our friends room closer to town seeing as they left
today. A few hours later we were staying by the main town, about
30 metres from the beach, with only a restaurant with lazy deck
chairs in-between the two. Many hours were to be spent sat in those
chairs.
That afternoon I went for a wander around town to see what Naxos
had to offer. There are hundreds of small streets in the Old Town
part of Naxos where people live and they are all white with blue
roofs and blue shutters. It is a very attractive scene.
That night I went wandering around the port area just seeing what
the nightlife was like. Amazingly I found that the place was thriving
with people, even at midnight. This is common for cities around
this part of the world. Families just wander up and down the streets
after eating a late dinner.

What can I say, beach, beach and more beach. Its not like
I was taking every possibility to make up for living in London
but I was.
That night we went wandering into the port looking for a few quiet
drinks. As everything closes down during siesta (12 4pm)
as it is too hot, it means that the shops are open until nearly
midnight.
We met up with a kiwi woman who took us to the camping ground on
the first day on the island & of course had a quiet drink with
her and her friends before heading off to a couple of other bars.

Wed 8th Aug
A special day for me as it was my 25th birthday. Yep, I never, not
even in my wildest dreams thought that Id spend my 25th birthday
on a Greek Island.
I have to say I was getting a little bored of lying on the beach
so I hired a mountain bike and went riding. After 5 hours I had
covered over 100kms including a 873 metre high hill and had seen
about half of the island. It was nice to just go off in whichever
direction and ride tiki touring. The houses in the more remote
towns were in far better standard to the ones in the ports Old Town.
They were more homely and better looked after, but then again they
werent as much of a tourist sight than the ones closer to
the ferry terminal.
Of course not riding a bike often (with the exception of at the
gym) managed to tire me out a little so the afternoon included a
little snooze before going out to dinner. We went to a place were
we had been a few times already so the staff knew us & Marie
had organised for them to bring out a little dessert with sparklers.
It was really cool. My first birthday cake in a few years and it
was on Naxos! I still cant get over it.
