Tues 14th Aug

Not an overly eventful day. Packed, had coffee and headed back to Athens on a 6 hour ferry trip. Marie left for the airport at 2am to board a flight to Croatia to see her family and I went to bed. That night I had a funny feeling. After travelling for the past month with Marie I was now alone in Athens with one more day of my holidays to go before I’d get home.

Lunchtime saw me head out for my last sight seeing efforts of this trip. However no one told me that it was a public holiday in Greece! Ergo nothing was open.

I managed to make my way by metro to the stop for the ancient Acropolis and wandered up the hill in the early afternoon heat carrying my pack. It certainly was a good work out.

The Acropolis is currently under a lot of restoration as Athens begins preparing itself for the Olympics in 2004. However, as with Rome, seeing these structures that have been standing for thousands of years is fantastic. I
got
some good shots and at the same time got a view of the whole of Athens.

From the hilltop that the Acropolis sits on, you can really see the over-population of Athens. It is just crazy.
Houses and apartment blocks stretch as far as you can see in all directions.

From the Acropolis I wandered down to the original Olympic Stadium and just had to walk a lap of the track. I broke the world record for one lap carrying a backpack. I’ve even got the medal to prove it. I took the opportunity for some photos and even managed to get in a few thanks to a very friendly Kiwi bloke (aren’t we nice).

From there I caught the bus to the airport and began the trip back to London. My holidays complete. After seeing a lot, doing a lot and relaxing more than I have in my entire life, I returned to London with a tan and lots of lasting memories. If you haven’t been to these counties I highly recommend it.
