Goal:  Throughout history developments in transportation have played and are playing an important role in the

           production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

 

 

Objectives:

1.  The students will be able to define exporting and importing and give examples of each.

2.  The students will be able to compare and contrast ways of moving goods through transportation.

3.  The students will be able to identify circumstances in which nations exchange money for goods and services.

4.  The students will be able to compare and contrast ways of transportation now and long ago.

5.  The students will be able to define goods, services, export, import, transportation, consumer, and producer.

6.  The students will be able to identify transportation as a service.  (police, fire department, EMS, etc.)

Procedures / Instructional Cycle:

Day 1.    The students will begin to complete a K-W-L plus chart on the topic of transportation to activate prior

               knowledge.  The "K" and the "W"  part will be completed at the beginning of the unit.  The "L" part will be           

               completed  at the end of the unit.  (Classroom Strategies for Interactive Learning By:  Doug Buehl p.75)

               Introduce the Unit by showing pictures of different forms of transportation.  Start by showing to date pictures,

               then show pictures from the LOC and American Memory.  Have the students list what differences they see.

                (30-45 min.)

Day 2.    Introduce key vocabulary; have the students use their social studies text to find the definitions of goods,

              services, export, import, transportation, consumer, and producer.  Discuss the vocabulary and how it relates

              to the theme of transportation. 

              Have the students look at the inspiration map to discuss and expand the discussion. Give groups of students

              a copy of the instructional map. Have the students work in groups to add to the instructional map.  ex:  goods

              that are exported and imported for each form of transportation.

                 (30-45 min.)

Day 3.    By using pictures and documents from the LOC and the American Memory discuss the ways of transportation

               used by America in the past.  Have the students Draw a picture of their favorite form of transportation from

               the past and write a paragraph describing what that form of transportation was used for.  Share the

               illustrations and descriptions with the class.

                    (30-45 min.)

Day 4      Power Point Presentation

               Have students begin working on the Webquest.  (30-45 min.)

Day 5      Complete Webquest,  Complete the "L" part of the K-W-L chart.

Day 6      Webquest Presentations / Assessment on Key Terms
