Life in America

In America, only about 10% of Poles were skilled workers.  Many Polish men got jobs as farmers, meat packers, or coal miners.  Some large families lived in poverty because the father was injured or just couldn't support the family.  Most Polish women were skilled workers in making cotton.  In most families, the children had to work in factories.  Many Americans didn't like Polish Americans and called them "Pollacks."  Many families just sent the father to America and then later on the rest of the family came.  This method was called Birds of Passage.
