The Detroit Red Wings signed the Stars Derian Hatcher to a 5-year contract. The acquisition of Hatcher will bring a physical presence that many thought The Red Wings were lacking last season. The Wings were not going to go after Hatcher until they knew that they could not sign all-star center Sergei Fedorov so that they didn’t spend more than there self imposed salary cap of 65 million dollars a season. The Red Wings hope that goal tender Curtis Joseph waves the no trade clause in his contract so they could trade for a player to make up for the loss of offense due to the loss of Fedorov.
