The basic idea of homeostasis is balance, to keep at a constant state

| state of equilibrium: a state of equilibrium,
or a tendency to reach equilibrium.
Such equilibrium may be reached or maintained metabolically through
biochemical reactions within a cell or organism, or socially and
psychologically within an individual, group, or population.
