Excretory System

Feces are held in the rectum and passed through the anus of the horse which is situated underneath the top of the tail.

The kidneys are situated on either side of the spine directly below the lumbar vertebrae. Their action is to secrete urine from the blood by the process of filtering. The ureter then carries the urine to the bladder which is a storage reservoir. Then, by contraction, the urine is discharged.

A normal amount of urine over 24 hours can range from 3-6 quarts. A healthy horse will have yellowish urine.
