All day, everyday, everywhere we go, science is part of our daily existence. It encompasses and envelops us – it is the foundation of an innovative, modern culture. We make science-based decisions everyday whether we are choosing to consume organic or genetically modified foods, or choosing energy providers. Science is also at the core of significant political decisions that India must face -- agricultural research, organ transplant, pesticides manufacture and genetic engineering, to name just a few. In the democratic setup of our society, it is imperative for all to have an understanding of science to be able to take an informed and active role in our country's future.

What is Science Literacy?

Science literacy encompasses knowledge of basic scientific concepts and processes. It includes important skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. It enables us to understand the link between science, technology, innovation, the economy, and our society.

Call for Action
The spirit of scientific enquiry has made human beings what they are. Science learning is essential throughout life - in the early years, in adolescence, at age 80, and beyond. For India to prosper, the time to act is now. Every individual and organization has a role to play in the promotion of science:

  • For parents: To encourage the development of their child's natural curiosity and provide a positive and safe learning environment for self-discovery.
  • For educators: To embrace a hands-on approach to science-learning.
  • For scientists: To find a way to talk about the significance of their work so that the general public can understand and appreciate the importance of what they are doing.
  • For business leaders: To invest in training their workforce and support learning opportunities provided by not-for-profit organizations.
  • For everyone: To develop a passion for lifelong science-learning and advocate the importance of a quality science education for Indian youth.
