Generation No. 3

10. LOUIS DAVID3 BOWIE (MARTHA ARABELLA2 BOTTS, THOMAS CROMER1) was born November 02, 1842 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and died August 19, 1899 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. He married MARY JANE RUSSELL. She was born 1839 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and died February 09, 1919 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

Notes for LOUIS DAVID BOWIE:

There is a discrepancy in records of Lewis David Bowie's birth date. According to The Bowies and Their Kindred by Walter Worthington Bowie, Lewis was born in 1843. Then from a record kept by his daughter, he was born in 1843. Lewis Bowie collected information about the South Carolina Bowies for Walter W. Bowie and it would be assumed that he reported the correct year of his own birth.

Louis served 4 years in Confederate Army. He was wounded 6 times as a member of Orr's Rifles. After the war he taught school and later was elected Clerk of the Court in Abbeville County, SC. Lewis lived in Due West, a part of Old Boonesborough Township. He is buried in Long Cane Cemetery near Due West, Abbeville County, South Carolina.

Notes for JAMES P. MCCLELLAN, SR.:
From the records of Gina Scott:

1900 Census, South Carolina, Anderson County, Centerville Township:
In the 1900 census of Anderson County-Centerville Township I found James listed as the head, Emma F. wife, Daughters Blanche and Nelle, sons James P Jr. and Robert Guy. It showed they had had 6 children and 4 were still living. They had been married for 14 years. All were born in S.C. Both his and her parents were born in S.C. It listed James as a farmer.

Interesting information: June 1990, I checked on 139 Sayre but 139 Sayre the number is no longer there. However, the street Sayre is still there.

1910 Census, South Carolina, Anderson County:
This is what I found on the census of 1910 of Anderson County. James McCellan (note spelling) was listed as the head and his age was listed as 50 years old. He was born in South Carolina, spoke English, could read and write. His occupation was listed as a Teamster, wholesale grocery. Lula was listed as his wife and her age was 32 years old. It stated that she was born in South Carolina, spoke English, could read and write. She had no occupation. The house they lived in was rented. At the time of this census they had been married for 7 years. Children listed were: Alberta age 6, George W. age 4, Juanita age 2, Guy age 14 who worked at Delucy Boy, Blanche age 22 who was a saleswoman in dry goods.

On his death certificate I found some errors. In a lot of my research, I have noticed that there are errors on death certificates. The reason being that the person giving the information does not always know the information and the information given is what they think it is. In the books I have read concerning genealogy they also say that death certificates are not always accurate.

The date of birth is June 5, 1859 not 1861. The name of his father is William Preston McClellan not Calvin McClellan the name of his mother is Emily not Emiline - although I have noticed that Emiline is also used in other places besides the death certificate.

Some things on the death certificate are not clear so I thought I would clarify these:

    1. Date of death - January 8, 1920
    2. Cause of death - Cardio-Renal Disease contributory or secondary cause-glandular tuberculosis - duration of 5 years.
    3. Burial - January 9, 1920 in Old Concord Cemetery (unmarked grave in woods across the street from the Concord Baptist in Anderson, South Carolina).
