ALEXANDER
HARVEY BIGGAR
“The town Biggarsberg, in South Africa is named after Alexander
Biggar whose pony cart fell over, much to the amusement of the Boers of the;
Wen Kommandot; whom he was accompanying him to Blood River” Alexander Biggar was killed by the Zulus in a battle the
following December. A range
of hills
near Ladysmith is called the Biggarsberg
85th Regimen Napoleonic
War
Veiw the Monument
With a large group of British Settlers, on its Eastern Frontier
usually called the '1820 Settlers'. His two sons died young without male heirs
and the name died out in South Africa but, according to the author of the
article on Alexander Biggar in the Dictionary of South Africa Biography;
'except for one, all Biggar's daughters married and there are thus many
descendants on the distaff side belonging to the Dunn,
De Villiers, De Smidt Maynard ... families'. The De Villiers
reference seems to be to Biggar's daughter Mary [born 1804 in Scotland] who
married John de Villiers at Alexander Biggar's estate Woodlands on 1 May 1828.
Georgina [born in Scotland in 1808] had been married in Grahamstown the year
before [8
February 1827] and, it would seem, was honoring her sister's
husband in the name.

John Dunn,
hunter of the 19th century, was the only white man ever to become a Zulu Chief.
As a
young boy he watched how an elephant trampled his father. After his mother’s
death in 1851, he took Catherine Pearce, a coloured woman, as his concubine and
moved from Durban to Zululand. He settled close to Empangeni and took part in
numerous Zulu wars. In 1856 he became the counselor of King Cetshwayo. He
married 49 Zulu women and fathered at least 117 children, for whom he appointed
a private teacher. After the Anglo Zulu war of 1879 the British divided
Zululand into 13 independent areas and appointed Dunn over one of them. At his
death in 1895 he had so many descendants that a reserve of 4 000 hectares along
the coast was allocated to them.
