Many people were glad that the slaves were free. They came to listen to Abraham read this new law.

When Lincoln was young he 
split wood for rails for fences.

Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth president of the United States in 1861. He was voted president again in 1865. People liked him because he was honest.
They called him honest Abe.

Some people were not happy. One person even shot Lincoln and killed him.

Abraham married a girl named Mary Todd.

There was a war when Lincoln was president. It was called the civil war. It was about slavery.

Many people came to Abraham Lincoln's funeral. They were very sad.

Lincoln lived in Springfield, Ill. with Mrs. Lincoln. This was their house.

Mr. Lincoln signed an important paper that said that all of the slaves could be free.
