Global Warming . . . isn't just about the earth getting warmer. As the climate changes extreme weather events - hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and heatwaves - become more common. 1998 was a year of extreme weather on frightening scale, with ice storms in Canada, heatwaves in Texas and Greece, hurricanes in Central America, floods in Britain - hardly anywhere on the globe escaped the effects of severe weather . . . Scientists . . . believe the planet is getting warmer because the industrialized world is pumping more 'greenhouse gases'- substances which cause the heat of the earth to be trapped, rather than to escape out of the atmosphere - than ever before . . .
