"I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Mary Cantrell, all
real and personal estate, during the time of her natural life, or widowhood,
except the money that is now in my hands.
"I will that it be equally divided amongst all my children,
except my son Elijah Cantrell's heirs; to the two children he left at his
decease, I will that they have of my estate ten shillings between them.
"I also except George Pirtle, and my grandson, Isaac Pirtle,
George Pirtle's son. I give and

Was born in New Castle Co.
Pa. That Isaac Cantrell Jr went to the
Carolinas is certain, but it is not
known to what section, they
first moved. It is claimed Jr. . and his brother James were the first of the
name to settle in Spartanburg County, S. C.
This branch of the family were later joined in S. C. by their Uncle John
Cantrell who came down from North Carolina Settled on the Pacolet river, where
he owned large tracts of land near where Buck Creek Baptist Church is now.

James Cantrell was probably
born in Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina before the Revolutionary
War. He received a grant of 400 acres
of land on the Sixth of February 1786 in the District of Ninety Six on both
Sides of Little Rock Creek of Enoree River for nine pounds six shillings
sterling from William Moultrie, Esq., then governor commander in chief of the
state of South Carolina. On the fifth
day of September 1803 James received an additional 186 acres of land on both
sides of Meadow branch of Buck Creek in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
He was given as head of a family, in the 1790 Census and is remembered by the older members of
the family as having settled with his brother Isaac, in South Carolina
according to traditions there, before any others of the name had come to that
section. He married Peggy______. James
Cantrell owned large tracts
of land on Pacolet River. His will was
probated Jan. 10, 1838, and his wife
Peggy, was executrix.

Was deaf and dumb. He used sign language. Mostly blind. While attending Cedar Springs School for the Deaf and Blind, he
injured his ankle playing ball. The
ankle was never properly taken care of, leaving Dewey with a limp. After the death of his parents, he lived
with his brother, Bonner and sister-in-law Minnie in his mother's and father's
house.. After the death of Bonner,
Minnie continued to take care of Dewey.
Rufus L. (R.L.) Cantrell (son of Bonner/Minnie) farmed the land which
was left to Dewey in the will of Rufus Lafayette. When Dewey became older and sick, Minnie was also getting older
and was unable to take care of him home.
Joe Hill Cantrell (brother of Dewey) sold the home place and put Dewey
in Mt. View Nursing Home (a county nursing home). At Dewey's death, each family member received $______ as dictated
by the will.
Minnie Bishop Cantrell moved
to Greenville. She lived in Greenville several years and then moved back to
Spartanburg. She died at home on Parris
Bridge Road., Spartanburg, SC.

at Liberty Church. Everyone who knew
her spoke of her as the best woman that they had ever known. She sent

John Thomas Cantrell was a large land owner on which he and
his family farmed. On Dec 09, 1891 he
bought 130 Acres of land for $600.00 from his father Which was formerly owned
by Henry Cantrell his grandfather.
Later Thomas bought 150 acres of land for $450.00 from Ralph K Carson
and
Homer L. Bonner. The records found indicate the sale of 37.7
acres to D. T. Cantrell in 1925, 150 Acres
to Mabel R., Cantrell in
1935 and held 150 Acres at the time of
death. This 150 acre tract was sold to J. W. Wall (74.5) acres and M. L.
Carswell (77 acres) and the 1940 survey indicated a total of 151.5 acres.
Joh Thomas is reported as
owning one of the first cars in Spartanburg County, a 1912 T-Model Ford. By the time of his death he was insolvent.
He was a generous man with his wealth, loaning money and signing notes to
family and relatives. Many of the loans
were never repaid and he had to pay off some of the bad bank notes.
