The Academic Magnet High School was founded in 1990 at Burke High School in Downtown Charleston. The school's curriculum consists of honors and AP courses. Over holiday break in 1997, the school moved from Burke to Cochran Hall on the Navy Base. The school currently holds approximately 500 students. In winter 2000, a new wing was completed to house science classrooms, labs, and the cafeteria.
