Crutch

not really an interpretation, just some random thoughts...

I just thought of "Crutch". The other day, I was thinking about its meaning more, though I didn't like the song at first. He said, (at least was quoted to have said), that the song was aimed at Jay Stanley and John Goff of Tabitha's Secret. Though the song seems like a relationship song.

I had sprained my ankle the day before and ended up on crutches. Having to hobble around on those things made me think more about this song and led me to the following grand revelation:

It takes so much energy to do anything with a sprained ankle. And, even with crutches, you're not going to make it anywhere. I'm starting to understand Rob's song better. He knows she's not going anywhere but down without him, because she depends on him. She's weak, and he's wanting someone capable of loving, not all wrapped up in their infirmity. When on crutches, all you can do is concentrate on your own walking. And he's needing love.

He wants her to realise how he's feeling. He refers to himself as a simple man, but he's really saying she knows, or at least thinks she knows, that he's simple. But she wouldn't need to break down his heart to understand it if he really were simple. There's something complex about him, and she can only ever understand pieces of him, because she's the simple one in reality.
