Stef Highlights

To the best of my recollection some of the more noteworthy occasions in my life before 1998...

Date
Event
July 4, 1968
Stef declares independence and is born in Oswego, New York
sometime in 1970
Stef moves to Memphis, Tennesee.
Home of Elvis, Mud Island and that really ugly pyramid building now.
Previously resided in California and Arizona (Before two I had traveled across the country!).
January 11, 1971
Stef's brother Ed is born.
Admittly, at first I didn't consider this a good thing, but he grows of ya...smile
Summer 1973
Stef graduates from Kindergarten and decides she wants to be a doctor.
I have the photos of me in a white cap and gown to prove it!
sometime in 1976
Stef moves to Raliegh, North Carolina.
Home to yucky brown beaches, and United States Miltary base where my Dad was a cool Marine head honcho guy.
Summer 1976
Stef gets the coolest dog in the world- Rascal!
Not to be confused with the stupidest dog in the world- Bridget,
or sweetest dog in the world- Hanah (who isn't my dog, but I've known her since she was a puppy),
and the friendliest dogs in the world-Ashley and Lucy(who aren't mine either)
Fall 1979
Stef moves to Reston, Virginia.
"The planned community" and home of the underground school Terreset.
Here's a short story: My brother and I couldn't go to school right away..something about shots..i dunno, so we thought COOL no school for like a month! My mother had school at home! She would give us spelling tests, make us read the paper and all sorts of stuff. Can you believe? The worse part to this story is she got us so hooked on school, that after we started going to school Ed and I would come home and play school! Yep, we were geeks even back then.
Fall, 1984
Stef learns to drive
My Dad and I were driving along a side road on my first lesson, when he explains that I have to stay in the lane. To make sure I'm in the lane he says "Make sure the car is well within the white line." I was like "What white line?" "PULL OVER!" and that was the end of my Dad teaching me to drive. They sent me to driving school. So I didn't my driving license until December 28, 1984, months after I was sixteen. I had to bike to my after school job at Micky D's. Yep I worked for MacDonalds, back when the uniforms were polyester and brown.... shudder
Spring, 1986
Stef visits Virginia Commonwealth University
I was so sure VCU was the school for me becuase it had strong programs in my two favorite subjects:Art and Medicine, but it was an Urban Campus in a bad part of Richmond. My parents and were doing okay distinquishing between a VCU building and the regular ol' run down city buildings (hint: the VCU buikdings had little plaques on them) until the tour guide told us that its a good idea to for the women to wear whistles so WHEN attacked (not "if") they can signal Police. That was when I rushed back home and quickly sent in my overdue housing deposit for Radford University
June, 1986
Stef graduates from South Lakes High School
Fall, 1988
Stef transfers from Radford University to University of Virginia
Not because I didn't like Radford. It's a great school. I guess geekdom took over and I studied alot and got good grades. I had a 3.94 GPA or something there. Why not a perfect 4.0? Well I did have some fun! People would see me dancing in a club and come up to me say "You're the girl who is always studying! You actually go out?! What's your GPA? Why don't you transfer?" I guess that didn't like me breaking all the grading curves so I was forced to leave...sniff. No I went to UVA for a better chance of pursuing my dream, TO BECOME A DOCTOR.
Fall semester, 1988
Stef takes Organic Chemistry (the pre-med "weed" class), HATES IT, gets a C and re-thinks this whole doctor idea
Decides to become an Artist
Spring semester, 1989
Stef applies to MFA programs to two Art schools (I won't name names!) and is promptly placed on the wait list, never to hear from them again...sigh. I can still draw and paint in my spare time.
Fall 1989
Stef refuses to take Physics (yet another pre-med "weed" class) and therefore officially drops out of pre-med...sigh.
Winter break 1989
Stef bums around Florida with Shumeet and friends and witness UVA getting creamed at the Citrus Bowl
Spring semester, 1990

Three weeks after sending out resumes an guy with a Italian accent calls and offers me a job! I promptly accept.

Stef graduates with B.A. from UVA
June 1, 1990

Stops by LA to visit Christine. Decides she must NOT live here. Too many palm trees and Neon signs.
August, 1995
Stef travels to Tennesee and drives back to Virginia with Mom and Grandma. Two cool ladies.
September, 1995
Stef asked to give first talk
I was one at of four asked to speak for 15 minutes at a small conference, where I met a guy with a German accent who I would later ask for a job
The organizer of the conference could tell I was nervous about giving the talk...I guess it was due to my inability to keep my hands from shaking and looking like I could pass out at any moment. When he asked me to give the talk I explained that I was only student, so to put me at ease in his introduction to the speaking portion of the evening he said go easy on the questions because one of our speakers is a student. The first speaker (some famous guy in muscle plasticity) gets up and jokingly said "I'm not the sudent." To which everyone laughs, because of course he's not the student he's famous, they all know him (Its geeky science humor). The second speaker gets up (another famous guy) and says "I'm not the student either." Again more laughter, because they know him too. Then I finally get up to give my talk and say "Well I'm the student" and (thankfully) again everyone laughs, because of course I'm the student, they don't know ME (except for maybe that guy in New Orleans). Well anyway the talk went well and after that everyone knew me!
May 6, 1996
Stef sucessfully defends doctoral thesis "Calcium transport in intact mammalian fast-twitch and slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibers".
Many parties follow soon after.
Febuary 13th
