The unit, All About Rules, asks the children to learn that:
..
....rules exsist so that people can be safe and happy,
some rules are for the protection and well being of people,
some rules are for co-operation and courtesy,
some rules are for the protection of property.
Activities
Some activities you may want to do with your class are listed below.
...
Laying down the Law
Brainstorm with the class what they think rules are and why we need them. Ask the children to predict what might happen without rules and compare that with what happens when we do have rules.Discuss some rules that you might need in the classroom for: safety, courtesy and protection of property.
Turn the negative rules children might come up with, such as: 'don't run in the classroom', and turn them into positives such as 'always walk in the classroom'.
The children must then make and decorate a poster for each rule, to be hung around the classroom.
Acting Up
This activity requires a little preparation, where road signs and crossings must either be made by the teacher or the students.Once all the prior preparation has been done, set the room up like a road, complete with all the signs and crossings. Put a lollypop persons' vest on one of the children and nominate the pedestrians and motorists (cars can also be made, or even just a round cardboard circle depicting the steering wheel can be used).
The children can then role play how they would cross and wait near the road, eg. for a bus.
Discuss what the children did and didn't do with class, asking them if there was anything that they would do differently.
Now ask a different set of children to stand up and do another role play demonstrating what they just learnt.
A variation of this, could be to have a policeman or actual lollypop person in the classroom teaching the rules etc so the children hear it straight, so to speak, from the horses mouth! This helps the children to understand that some rules are for protection and well-being of people.
