People Who Help Us

...
People who help us, is a extremley useful unit, as it portrays the following generalisations:
..
interdependence means helping one another,
individuals and groups in the neighbourhood have many ...needs and wants,
a number facilities are provided in our neighbourhood,
money is required in order to supply many of our needs ...and wants.
....

Activities

Some activities you may want to do with your class are listed below.
...
I'm the firechief....

Have the member of your local community groups visit the school and talk about their services. How the children can use them, when the children can use them etc. If the fire authorities are unable to come to you, they are usually quite willing to have you come to them.

Have a number of followup lessons on the procedures in case of an emergency, and devise an emergency plan for the classroom.

The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker....

Introduce the idea that not only the people in the emergency services help us. Draw the comparisons about the everyday people such as the garbage person etc who help us. Write a story with the help of the children and think of how many people who help us you can get into it.

The next stage is publishing the book. Ask the children to draw the pictures and proof-read the final copy. Put your book together, and add it to your class library.
